jesscaldwell:
There was many ways Jesse had thought this whole thing would go with Devon, most of which had them joking about high school and putting it behind them. They’d always been close, even if you took the romantic feelings away, as human beings they connected. But so far things had just been awkward and Jess didn’t really know if there was anything he could do about that. He thought sleeping on the couch could be a good start, considering she more than likely had a partner waiting for her at home, and for Devon’s sake he didn’t want to make that weird. But at this hour of the night he was strongly considering moving to the floor with how miserable the couch was to sleep on. Shifting in a futile attempt to get somewhere in the range of comfortable, he soon after heard her question through the silence. “Yeah” he replied quietly, taking a pause as he sat up, figuring sleep was a long shot at this point. “Sorry if my tossing is keeping you up. I work nights, so my normal sleep schedule is totally fucked.” he explained quietly, making sure not to disturb Max and Juda. “Are you okay?”
A sense of relief spread through Devon's body when she heard his voice in the still air. Maybe he didn't hate her as much as she thought. She followed in suit and sat up, only able to make out the silhouette of his body in the darkness. "I'm okay." She answered softly, as not to disturb the others. "I'm in the same boat as you, fucked sleeping schedule and all, so no need to apologize about the tossing. I'd be wide awake either way." Something in the air gave Devon a surge of bravery and she crawled forward on the bed, settling herself a few feet away from the couch. Tomorrow she'll tell herself it was because it was 2 a.m. and everything felt like an alternative universe at that point or that she was drunk on her sleepiness, but right now she just wanted to be closer to him. "Why are you sleeping on the awful couch?"
