Destry Darr Designs reveals new interior refits 

The newest Ocean Alexander 85' and 72' have arrived for final completion by Destry Darr Designs for the 2015 Palm Beach Boat Show.

In January, my Client called and requested that I fly to St. Thomas to see his new 142' Trinity Yacht and give him a complete list of everything I felt needed to be included in his spring refit. Upon presenting my suggestions to the Owner he acknowledged and shared his budget with me. We then went to work modifying the list by removing items that could wait and adding additional items that were of particular importance to the Owner. Some Owners are reluctant to reveal a budget to the designer. Give and take should be accepted on a refit and budgets can be beneficial to both the Owner and Designer.  The budget should be realistic and contain a contingency for unexpected situations that may arise. Even when budget is of foremost concern, an Owner's goals can be attained through successful collaboration and a solid scope of service initiated at the start of a refit project.

It is what you don't see that can cause unexpected budgetary issues.  As mentioned in our post "Ready For A Refit", to be in yachting, you've got to love it AND be a little crazy. Murphy's Law was written for yacht refits. If it can break, crack, slip, fall off, tear or just plain wear out, it will on a yacht whether an Owner has numerous refit experiences, or is planning their first. Keeping this thought in mind throughout the refit process will help to keep some perspective on the project.

Our original plan was to replace the Travertine tile and carpet throughout the 142' Trinity Yacht "Chevy Toy" and take a look at the acoustical Soundown padding to determine if it needed to also be replaced. What we found on the underside of the padding was mold and mildew at each of the seams of the floorboards below.  The entire Main Salon floor was rotting from an AC leak that went undetected.  The leak came from above, through the walls and under the built in cabinetry and floor.

Throughout the 142' Trinity "Chevy Toy", the interior has been updated with brand new carpet, stone, wall coverings, window treatments, furniture and bedding to create the elegant and transitional feeling that the owner desired.  The Main and Dining Salon was remodeled with all new custom furniture and updated entertainment system. 

The entertainment system and cabinetry housing them in the Master & Guest accommodations were also upgraded.

The three Main Deck Foyers, Sky Lounge Foyer, Main Deck and Upper Deck Day Heads received new stone floors and counter tops.

Destry Darr Designs is proud to announce that the 120' Nordhavn "Aurora" has been selected as a finalist for the three prestigious awards.  She will be competing for best new displacement motor yacht in the under 500 GT category at the World Superyacht Awards in Amsterdam on May 3, 2014.  In addition to the World Superyacht Awards, she is up for best overall design and exterior styling by Jeff Leishman, PAE’s Chief of Design, and his team, as well as for Best Interior Design by Destry Darr Designs at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards in London on May 9th, 2014.  We have worked long and hard on this custom yacht interior and are honored to be a part of this prestigious event! Many thanks to the Owners and the talented group at Nordhavn, Destry Darr Designs and all involved for assisting to create such a magnificent vessel!

After many, many hours of designing the layout and custom cabinetry for the new Nordhavn 120’ “Aurora" and working along side Nordhavn through the construction of the first hull of their future queen ship, the decision was made to complete the outfitting at the South Coast factory in China. We immediately started preparing and packing the bedding, throw pillows, provisions, art, accessories, carpet and loose furniture to be shipped.
