âJust trust me,â he spoke, watching the other. âAnd remember that thereâs more up my sleeve than youâll ever think to guess. Unlike you, the brotherhood is my life, and itâs my only life.â He didnât have any other pleasuresâdenied himself even alcoholâin sacrifice for the brotherhood the past few years. âPlay your part, Nikolai, and learn to listen when your elders speak.â The last part was a joke, punctuated with a soft laugh.
âIâve always trusted you,â Nikolai muttered, his head hanging for but a moment. A blind trust, he had always held for his family. As much as he wanted to hold a straight face at his brotherâs joke, Nikolai couldnât help but let the corners of his lips curl. His head shook from side to side slowly, holding back his own chuckle. âThe seats always here if you find yourself wanting it-â

âThey canât drink, they canât die,â he spoke carefully, shaking his head. Aleksey had given up drinking to keep his head clear, knowing that it would lead him into a problem again if he were to start back, but that was part of his life that heâd kept quiet from his family. They didnât need to know the struggle with alcohol addiction that heâd had. âIâve got a meeting with McC tonight, so hopefully youâll get that call tomorrow.â
Nikolai topped up his own glass and sipping from it casually. A part of him would worry what the new connection would bring, knowing all to well that if the Radulov family where to find out they would face nothing but conflict - but they would be ready. The Volcov family was always ready. âI will be waiting for the call. Thank you, brother.â
redskynightsâ:
It was par for the course with them: theyâd argue for a while, get heated, and things would settle down, but he always had to remind his brother that he was in that seat because Aleks wanted him there. âYeah seriously, I think they could just go pass for models, and weâd be set,â he sighed, shaking his head. He carded a hand through his hair, still seated on the table. âNow, you see why I wonât hurt an innocent woman, or children?â he asked, meaning the comment about Nikâs wife.Â
âI would hope, that if necessary you would make the call. We know that a woman can be just as dangerous as any man,â Nikolai spoke, his hand reaching into the cabinet and pulling out a bottle of liquor. He held up carefully as an offer;Â âbut I will draw the line at children.â There was nothing more innocent than a child.Â

âThe Irish.â One of the multiple Irish mob families, but the only one he trusted. âWe have no problem with the Notoriani, and theyâre close with them, on top of it.â Greg and Dante had even grown up together. âThere are other ways to get money; what Iâm saying is that if itâs found out who you really are? Well, that puts everyone in hot water. So donât act like Iâm the only one that plays with fire in this family.â Sitting on the desk, he put his foot in the chair and watched his brother. âTides turn, Kolya, as do tables. Iâm the good looking oneâmaybe we should start plastering my face all over everything,â he joked.
The friendships Greg had created when he was young had proven to be beneficial for years to come. They were no longer children, but full fledged members of their organizations will pull and influence just like Greg. It the Italians could come to trust the Irish, than so could they. Especially if there came a time where they needed to go beyond exchanging good. âYou and I both know that if we were plastering faces based on looks it would be Lesya and Greg everywhere,â he added, laughing more. Finally, it didnât feel like they were at each others throats.Â

âThen trust what Iâve doneâs a better idea.â When he found out what it was. âExpect a call from Kellan McCullough by the end of the week. And leave this footwork to me. And your political career has also plastered your face all over, put you in the spotlight, so remember that as a risk. I can go blend in anywhere, but your face is always going to be known. If your political opponents ever found out you have bratva ties? Weâre all done.â And besides, this new deal had better perks for himânamely, an excuse to go around McCullough, and in turn the fiery redheads that he had. âAlliances come in many forms, including those that evolve. Thing is? Cutting off ties with Radulov cold-turkey is a bad idea. It needs to taper. Otherwise, we may face backlash, and I donât want to have to go around busting heads myself.â
âThe Irish?â Nikolai was less than impressed with that idea. While they werenât necessarily a problem, they were unpredictable - and from what he heard last, were in bed with the Italian mob. âDidnât hear you complaining about my face being everywhere when the campaign money came to great use to us,â he reminded a bit of a laugh in his voice. âWe will keep up our appearances until it is safe for us to keep our distances. I will relay the message to Lesya.â
This is more than some chemical reaction This is more than some young adult attraction I know I know This is more than some blind infatuation This is more than a strong inclination
Pre-med and eventually, medical school consumed the young woman, often spending her nights studying rather than sleeping. This also took away from her social life as she often isolated herself. While she secluded herself, Delilah did managed to fins friendship in those who displayed similar interests and they often kept her sane by pulling her away from her studies. The support of her friends and family were essential to her success as a student and now a surgical resident at Chicago Med. She works under the shadow of her father and is constantly trying to prove herself.

âStressing the importance doesnât seem to do any good,â he spoke, taking a seat on the desk. âYou try to leave me out of things, and even Greg agrees. If you want a soldier, you go to him. Heâs the one thatâs blindly loyal, and Iâm the one that cleans up his mistakes.â Which was the truthâAleksey had always done his best to clean up their baby brotherâs mistakes. âYou chose the politics thingâthatâs on you. None of us had anything to do with that, and we donât let our other things interfere with this little thing of ours. While youâre off at state dinners, and cavorting with house representatives and shit, Iâm out here forging alliances born in blood. The thing is? You and I are different sides of the same coin, Nikolai. While you prefer to use a serpentâs tongue, I prefer the fangs, but you damn well know we can turn it around if we try. So I suggest you listen, and when I make an executive decision, you know that it isnât something that I havenât weighed heavily. I respected your decision on the deal with the cartel, even though I donât like drug running, now you have to respect mine on the weapons. Name one person that you know thatâs going to know more about that than me. Iâll give you a few to think about it,â he spoke, now talking with his hands.Â
âYou know Iâve always left the weaponâs dealings to you,â Nikolai didnât need to argue that. It was his brotherâs specialty. It had been the reason he had come to work so closely with the Radulov family. He had trusted that his brother had found a secure contact, and now it was proven that they were far from trust worthy. âMy political career has propelled us forward, we canât act like it hasnât done good for us.â And he was sure it would only continue to do good. âAlliances come in many forms, Aleksey.â
redskynightsâ:
âI can admit that Iâm far from fucking perfect,â he warned him. At the end of the day, they all had a part to play, and while his method of reminding his brother of that wasnât the best, it was just thatâhis method. âIâll question you whenever I damn well feel like it.â It had happened before, and it would happen again. âYouâre not seeing what Iâm sayingâyou arenât leading this family alone, and you never have been.â It had been the three of them, trying to keep things afloat when their parents had died early. âGiving Lesya that much visible power would be a foolâs move and you know it. It would go to her head and sheâd go tyrant. Weâve got the blood of Tsars, but we arenât absolute.â The words were chosen carefully, crafted quickly as he spoke. âHer allegiances are money and whatever man she can step on with her heels and you know it.â Which, at the base of who she was, was the truth. âIâve been trying to tell you for a month, but you brush me off every time. Youâve got to remember that you canât ignore things people are warning you about, things people are telling you, simply because you think you have everything under control. None of us are God, Nikolai, and we canât know everything. I stopped your last order with the Radulov family and pulled it to another group.â To the Irish supplier. âYou can be the face, but you donât know everything. None of us do, but if youâre going to be childish and not listen, and instead go on an ego trip, then we canât put what we know together. You go to Lesya, and you brush me off like Iâm just another soldat, trying to claw his way into someone even knowing his name. That stops now, because this is serious. I saw Constantin with Adlan Yamadayev and they were talking business. Now, do you want your unwillingness to listen to me to be the reason someone comes after your wife? Because not everyoneâs got morals like I do.â
âI have always acted with the council of yourself or Lesya, you know that.â Nikolai reminded, his words growing softer now. He hated fighting with his family, but maybe now that they had gotten the words out they could speak civilly and come to the conclusions needed to move forward. âI think you often forget that I do not avoid anyone intentionally. Iâm a busy man,â Nikolai didnât just have obligations to their family, but to his state and country as well. Banquets, dinners, charity events - living a life in politics wasnât an easy life to live. Nikolai didnât get to relax when the clock hit five, he was always working. âYou should have stressed the urgency to me. I could have made arrangements-â The mention of his wife left him choked. He would never let anything happen to her, or any member of his family. He would get the blood on his hands if necessary.Â
redskynightsâ:
âYour game?â There was the laugh, a chest-rattling sound. âGod, youâre looking over the details so closely that you miss the entire picture. It isnât your game, Nikolai, and it never has been. âYouâve played into my hands time and time again, Nikolai, and youâll play into them again. Iâm the first born son, weâre all aware. I remember when we were boys, you were always on my heels, trying to know what I was doing, trying to talk you way into getting into things you werenât ready for yet.â He moved, clapping his brother on the shoulder. âJust know that I donât support this, and if the Radulov fold, then we have other avenues, and youâll know about those when the time comes. âI have my set of rules, if you want to talk allegiancesâany man should have his set of rules, and I wonât kill a child just for being related to someone that owes a debt.â Children were easily moldable, their minds easily changed about what they saw or heard, or didnât see or hear. âHe trusted me to make the right decisions, and Iâve made my decisions my own.â And each one had its purpose, its meaning. âThe desires of the flesh can cloud the mind.â Which was trueâitâs why heâd denied himself any such desire for so long, anything that could cloud his mindâdrink or smoke or delight of the flesh. âOur legacy runs deeper than you know, as does my allegiance. You want to question me, then look at yourself. Youâre as flawed as I am. You hide behind your words and your games, using double-speak and talking in circles. Not everythingâs about that. If Iâd wanted that seat outright, it would be mine, and if I desire it at any point, it will be. You only know the business aspect of things anymore. I remember when you were just a soldier, a soldat trying to prove himself, and to me, thatâs what you still are. I say this with love, Nikolai, but donât act like youâre unflawed, or that youâre the only one that can get people to do what you want. Keep in mind my warning: Radulov sells to the Chechens,â he spoke, the last phrase like shutting the lid on a lead coffin. Their greatest enemy, the Chechen mafia. âAnd he marks his pieces.â Which, the latter of which heâd come to find out when cleaning one thoroughly.Â
âYouâre just a hypocritical as I, Aleksey,â he reminded slowly, not once falling back to the seat they had started their discussion in. If Aleksey was so sure of himself, he could have it. Calling all the shots and being the face of their family wasnât easy, and it never would be. There was a reason he never chose to do it alone, and had been reluctant to take it in the first place. âIf you continue to question me and my actions, then you question my ability to lead this family - then you can take your rightful seat and see just how easy it is - or maybe Lesya would like her turn? Just know she wonât be as understanding as I when you come questioning her allegiances.â His hands fell into his pockets, his eyes shifting to the side when the name of the opposition had been mentioned. It was no secret that the Radulov family sold their goods to many buyer, it was all part of business, but the Chechen name would always leave a sour taste in his mouth. âYouâre the one who founded our working relationship with the Radulov family. Now, was this something you had just over looked at the time, or a recent revelation?â

âI want you to remember what you just saidâyouâre where you are because I want you there. Iâm not ignorant, but I know this risk is greater than the benefit. I know we donât need to rely on them for supplies.â Having one supplier would bottleneck them in a bad situation, and he knew it. Thatâs why he had other deals on the side that heâd not even mentioned to his brother. His gaze followed his brother, never letting him out of his sight, his own posture relaxed, open, though his thoughts were guarded. âI think you know that your tongue doesnât work on me by now. A soldier follows orders blindly, Nikolai. Iâve not followed one order blindly, and you know damn well by now that Iâll undermine your authority and do what I think is best.â He stood up, moving to pull his brother close by his shirt, eye to eye. âI may be cutthroat,â he spoke, his voice dropping low. âBut Iâm much more than you give me credit for. Call me a soldier one more time, and youâll find out exactly what Iâm capable of.â He let go of his grip, his jaw set, blue eyes focused. Whatever his brother wanted to dish out? Heâd match it. âYou ever think that my choice was made for a reason? To get people where I want them? If thereâs one lesson I was taught when papa was grooming me, it was that people are all pawns in someone elseâs game. It just is a matter of whoâs game dominates. And guess what? Youâre exactly where I want you. There are family secrets, however, that youâll never be privy to. Remember my warning, and know that I donât support your trust in Constantin, or in Irina.â
While Nikolai was far from the fighter his brother was, he was not fazed by the grip on his shirt. He glanced down at it amused. So quickly had it become a battle of wills. âI give credit where credit is due, and you should do the same.â Manipulation was a game he played well, and not one he played into easily. He would be their greatest asset against the Rudulov twins. Yet, Aleksey was acting as if he had sent Natalya in to do his bidding. âWe were all a pawn in his game, and the game is mine now,â he laughed to himself, âmust roll in his grave knowing I am the one in his seat carrying out is legacy. Not his precious first born son with his secrets. Our family will never continue to prosper we live in fear. Alliances must be made, risks made, and if you think I am so daft to let Irina and her whores dull my mind, you do not know me, brother.â Nikolai was a happily married man, but the club had become a place of convergence that offered an abundance of knowledge for his own manipulation. The power he could attain from knowing one of his greatest political enemies had kinks and pleasures that would turn all against them. âLetâs not forget who often struggles with his allegiances-â Alekâs morals had always posed to cause trouble for the family. If a woman or child got in their way, it was Aleksey who struggled to take the shot - and while Nikolai didnât often find himself in his position he knew better than anyone that even the innocent were casualties of war.Â
redskynightsâ:
âWhen this blows up, youâre going to get a huge I told you so, little brother.â People often thought he was nothing but the muscle, and he let them think thatâthere was no use exposing what was going on in his head, because that was the kind of thing that god a man killed, or worse. âI think your judgement is a little clouded when it comes to that pair. Theyâre working with the Irish, the Italians,â he pointed out, crossing his arms over his chest, looking at his brother carefully. âYouâre going to remember that I gave up my rightful position for you, because I generally trust your judgement, but Iâm going to call you out when I see it. Thatâs my job.â One of the notorious Two Spies, Aleksey wasnât without his own dangers, and he knew how to play the game. âIf nothing else, itâs going to put a mark on your political career.â Which was trueâskeletons came out of closets, and if his brother was seen patronizing such an establishment? Well, he would be dragged through the mud. âBe careful what you say to the Radulovs, and this is a warning. I know how Constantin is.â And that in and of itself was a terrifying thingâtwo faced, and always playing the cards to has advantage, just like their own sister. âDonât become a pawn, Kolyan. How often do I question your decisions? Keep that in mind when you think over my words here, and remember that not even you know whatâs going on in my head.âÂ
âOur family did not get to where it is without taking risks, brother,â he reminded gently, âwe have not always been understanding of the choices each other had made, but the only way this blows up is if we let it divide us. Letâs not forget who made our connections to the Rudulovâs in the first place.â Nikolai had never been one for the dirty work, and weapons were far from his specialty. âWhen father passed all those years ago, it was you he wanted in this seat, not me. I was just a boy then. A clueless teenager fresh out of high school with not much than a mouth that could talk itâs way out of the trouble I got myself into - but you, you were the man father wanted you to be. A cutthroat soldier, capable of things even I still consider much too for my hands. Yet, you chose not to take this seat. I will never quite understand why.â Standing, Nikolai began to pace behind his desk, before rounding the table and placing his hands on the back of the vacant seat on the other side. âYou more than anyone should know how I am with words, and while I am one to talk I am not one to show all the cards in my hand. If youâre so concerned with my ability to lead, youâre more than welcome to take the seat back.â He spoke slowly, and gestured the chair behind the desk that had been a symbol or power in their family for generations.Â
