“ m - my … ”  unsettling as it was,  bede couldn’t deny that it sort of  made sense.  color had faded a little from his face,  as the sense of familiarity ever since he first met rose and oleana at the orphanage came to mind.

                           he believed her.  his eyes closed and his knuckles rested against the edge of his mouth as he thought,  tried to pull up more memories from his childhood.  he couldn’t;  it was difficult to even think about when he was without a family and without a real home,  let alone  BEFORE  that.

                            “ …  why didn’t you tell me? ”  he asked;  his voice had lost its smug and challenging edge to become something softer,  much more childlike.

   she bit her lip, eyes trying not to give away vulnerability. her fingers curled to clench against the palm of her hand. she couldn’t imagine what bede was thinking right now . . .

   “ rose thought it best if i did not tell you. i was a busy woman who didn’t have the time to care for a child, nor the patience, ” oleana explained, “ plus, we did not want any other attachments to our endorsement, like cham- former champion leon’s. i am truly sorry for EVERYTHING that rose and i put you through. ”
