What the plot wants you to see is this selfless sacrifice of forfeiting your happiness for the sake of your beloveds happiness, but all I can see is misery, ESPECIALLY towards your beloved. You'll be in some so self-satisfying heroism world of "I gave up my loved one for his own happiness", but your beloved? They'll be thinking they weren't enough. Often ex-lovers are involved, so they'll believe they are easily replaceable. They weren't worth fighting for. They weren't worth communicating to, to find a middle ground. They will be constantly living in the worst thoughts of themselves, because you decided to give up. All their self-esteem issues will be confirmed. There is nothing more hurtful than that.

Almost everytime it is unnecessary seperations due to lack of communication. It doesn't make the relationships stronger, it actually makes it more unstable if your partner keeps abandoning you at any sign of trouble.
