The Wayfarer
Prologue
A new mystery, a new quest
Aether had returned to Mondstadt for the Windblume festival, and to help Alice with her little project that would get all the Knights of Favonius up to date with what happened in Mondstadt while they were away in Nod-Krai.
Paimon suggested they look around, talk to some new faces and help out Alice, but more importantly; to find a nice spot and eat some dishes from Mondstadt while reminiscing on the start of their journey. And maybe explore a part of Mondstadt they haven't been to previously...
Aether agreed, but decided to keep their party intact, even when his guide wasnt around he still believed working with others was better than alone. Even if some members would rather go off on their own...
"Why am I here?" The Wanderer asks, not with his usual snark, but a more inquisitive tone.
"I figured it would be nice for you to visit, the festival might be loud and rowdy, but it still might have something you'd enjoy" Aether replied, he had taken note on the changes that the Wanderer had gone through. He seemed less angry with life after the events in Sumeru, the adventures with Aether and especially when Durin became human. Still quick to snap but understands that he should be more perceptive to both his own feelings and the feelings of others... and it shows.
"I doubt that.... but... thanks for the invitation..." The Wanderer said... softly. He's still getting used to this.
"No worries!" Aether said with a smile, completely oblivious to the others having their own conversation
"Oh how I know you'd love your time here! The songs, the love! And especially the booze!" Venti said with a devilish smirk, leaning over.
"O-oh... im sure.. I guess?" Illuga shrugged, he wasn't really convinced, maybe he'd enjoy the event but this enthusiasm Venti had was kind of overwhelming.
"Don't worry about him, he has a bias for his homeland" Zhongli assured Illuga. The Geo Archons posture as firm as ever.
"And you dont?" Venti questioned sarcastically, rolling his eyes.
Oh boy... here we go again.
"Umm... lets save this for later... we're close to the city!" Paimon flew in between the two, swooping in to save the day... I guess?
The group has some idle chatter as they approach the city gate, but suddenly the Wanderer asks "Is it ok if I go see Albedo? I know Durin is staying with him for now and I'd like to check up on them."
"Of course" Aether replies, he would never let an opportunity for Wanderer to express his emotions. And so the enigmatic anemo wielder breaks away and starts his hike into the Dragonspine Mountain. "Come back as soon as you can! Kay? We'd love to hangout mo-" but before Venti could finish, his head snaps to face towards the forest near Starsnatch cliff. His eyes grow serious for a moment and his stance more guarded but soon returns to his cheery self. "Hang on, I also need to check on something, i shan't be long!"
Odd. Aether knows that the God of anemo and freedom has control of the wind, and therefore he pretty much has eyes and ears anywhere in Mondstadt so what could possibly draw his eye? Aether knows that recent events such as the random bleeding of realities into Teyvat has spawned some unsavory monsters and has brought in people from different worlds... he just hopes its not something too troublesome...
Once they reach the gate, a mix both outlanders and people native to Teyvat meander around. Both fighters and civilians, professional and conventional workers and freelance mercenaries. Some looked tough, some looked soft, some looked mean and others look carefree. Its strange, ever since his guide or "patron" vanished, the "Bleeding of Worlds" happened. Teyvat has never been the same after it, more wars, more magic, more outlander gods and even more monsters which funnily enough also attack the Abyss order.
Aether decides to put a pin in the idea, at least for now because he would like to enjoy the festival. Zhongli and Illuga seem to be enjoying their time so far, why miss out?
He would interact with the people in the city, both strangers and familiar faces like Chongyun and Xinqiu, Lyney and his siblings, Thoma and even Kinich (and unfortunately Ajaw)...
After a day or two of messing around and helping Alice out, Paimon and Aether decided to head to the beach below Starsnatch cliff, to where it all began. The festival was definitely fun, but after some time the talk of foreign affairs and issues like land disputes in Inazuma or the rise of unholy creatures in Sumeru were getting a bit much. He'll definitely try to help out if he needs to but the gods of those nations and their people should have it under control. Or so he assumes.
As the pair reach the cliff and take in the view of the ocean, Paimon comments "It really does bring back memories."
"The journey really was simple back then. A part of me envies my past self, but I'd be lying if I said I wish I could go back. We've met so many wonderful people." Aether responds, his eyes are soft and his face displays a subtle but genuine smile.
His face tilts downward though, a more somber expression takes form as he remarks "I just hope that these new outlanders have a much more easier time settling than I did"
"Why do you say that?" Paimon asks
But before he could respond the pair noticed something below.
Gazing down to the beach, they notice some recent footprints. A trail leading from the water, through the dry sand and towards to the path that overlooked the first Statue of Barbatos. While it isn't odd for people to go to this beach, especially for those who live near, Aether had an ominous feeling to investigate. Almost as if he felt compelled to find the owner of this trail.
Following footprints, and the hydro elemental trail, they head to the north of Statue of Barbatos in between some bushes and discovered a recently burnt out campfire. Some basic supplies are laid out nearby such as torn up bloody clothes, eaten apples and some notes. The writing is in another language but Aether can understand it, he's been able to read various writings in different languages thanks to some of his rather uncanny abilities. The first one, with some water damage reads:
" I have no clue where I am, I have a suspicion but I'll need to explore. Hopefully I can find some fresh clothes because I really dont wanna walk around with heavy, soaking wet clothes."
Then the second one looks more in tact but with some light smudges of what seems to be blood, it reads:
"I must be in a coma, or a dream or something. A very convincing one since I can read this and think clearly. The apples and stuff here feel real. Im feeling a mix of fear and a little excitement because if im where i think I am, then this little situation I am in might end positively"
The last note looks a little grim, definitely stained with blood, dried blood but definitely recent. It reads:
"Ok, definitely not a dream, i felt pain in dreams but this is real pain. New pain. Came across what is DEFINITELY hilichurls. And while one or two are easy to deal with, getting shot by a crossbow was definitely not what I hoped for. Im going to move out real soon because i dont know how to work with a chest wound and I dont want the churls to find me. I'll try carry what i can but this shield is heavier than I expected and my shitty blunt replica sword is causing its own issues. Im praying that this doesnt cause infection."
Aether feels a little worried, the blood while dried, still has its vibrant red coloring. This means that its a coin toss on whether they're nearby and dying or they had found help. He knows he can ignore monsters in the other nations for now because they are very capable, but this person was injured and potentially is nearby. For some reason he feels compelled to help them. He has to, as if someone close to him is at risk of

Death, is what you thought you'd be facing when you were shot. You were just overreacting. Sure you did get shot, but the damage is definitely not fatal thanks to your replica sword... I mean it will be if you don't get it checked by a doctor or someone with medical knowledge. It will definitely get infected if left alone.
"Shut it" you tell yourself, trying to adjust the shield grip to a more comfortable tightness.
You sound crazy, but talking to yourself seems way more sane than admitting that you're no longer in the 'real world'. But lets be honest, embracing madness is the only esca-
"YEEOUCH!" You cry as you rinse your bolt wound with some water, left over from your soaked and torn shirt. You hope this will be enough for now. You NEED to think of a game plan; weapons, armor and supplies! How will you get it? Where? Maybe sharpen your replica sword? But what about your wound?
You've read some fanfiction about genshin so you are a little worried, but needing to pick between the gallows or a slower death via basic infection was a surprisingly difficult decision. You should try to find some chests or steal some gear off sleeping bandits, hilichurls or treasure hoarders and then move towards the city.
You steel yourself and stand up, packing whatever you can with you and decide to raid a hilichurl camp. They are much easier to deal with, you know that their strength is mainly from numbers and their special units like mages or mitachurls. Stealing a crossbow or a club from the basic fighters should be relatively easy.
So after walking for a short while, you spot a small outpost of hilichurls. Its one leading to or around wolvendom meaning you might be able to destroy the bulk of the battle power from this small unit if you detonate the explosive barrel. Its very volatile so theoretically throwing a stone should do it but to play it safe, its best to use an element of some kind... maybe throwing one of those tiny pyro or cryo flowers? You'll need to think up of some way to pick them up and lob them or at least find another way to detonate the barrel.
You slink away and are somewhat excited to put this plan into play. Sure the earlier scuffle led to you cowardly running away but this time you have a plan and the surprise advantage. Speaking of, while making your way to a small pond, you tear off another piece of what used to be a shirt and drench it in water. Then you make your way to a wild pyro flower. The itty bitty little ones. You know you wouldn't survive fighting the mimic one-
"Shut it"
Wow... you really are going crazy. After drenching the flower, you quickly grab the bud an-
"OWW!" The fire of the flower went out but that doesn't mean the heat vanished. Another wound because of your recklessness.
Quickly improvising, making a makeshift slingshot from the drenched cloth, you pick up the flower and run back to that hilichurl outpost. You observe the movements for now and you see the mage, you hope the blast can take it out before it activates its bubble shield. You plant your replica sword into the ground and move out from behind the tree and start swinging the sling, and when your arm starts getting tired you release!
Boom? YOU MISSED!
Your burnt hand stung badly so your shot landed directly onto a hilichurl archer, pissing it off.
You react quickly, charging in you manage to get the drop on one hilichurl before it realized where the shot came from. Beating it down with your shield and grabbing its crude wooden club, you light it on fire using the campfire and toss the club at the barrel which finally caused and explosion. It sent the abyss mage flying down into a tree but before you could celebrate, the archer fired a shot.
It hit your shield but broke through the flimsy wood and cut your hand. You rush the hilichurl, high on adrenaline and a massive ego boost, disarming the hilichurl. Grabbing the crossbow and a few bolts, you decide to get out while it was going well and the sound of the mage warping nearby reinforces this idea.
But as you turn around and start moving you realize theres another barrel that blocks your way back to your sword, which you'll need if you want any chance of escaping this fight.
You sprint with all you have and the mage sends an elemental attack your way, in a split second decision you turn around and raise your flimsy shield towards the barrel and try to jump backwards to your sword.
The wind blows you away from the exploding barrel and towards the sword. Your shield shatters from the explosion and you hit the ground hard. The mage warps pretty much on top of you, laughing as you weakly reach towards your sword.. just out of reach.
Before you pass out, you hear a growl and the spark of electricity, witnessing the mage get thrown around and destroyed.
You close your eyes, and wonder... who just saved you?
