Siri had an awesome 2hrs session of RPM (Rapid Prompting Method of board communication) yesterday. It was very emotional to her and as a mom it was even worse because I didn’t know all that she expressed about herself. She was working on a research project for her Psychology class. Oh my gosh it was not easy for me to watch her express all that on a laminated board. Her CP is well trained and was so patient with Siri. Siri gets to take a break when she wants to which is so nice as her CP doesn’t stop until Siri requests for one. I just love the way her CP empowers her by giving her the control of her pace. As parents we are supposed to make it easy for our kids to navigate through this world. Unfortunately Autism makes it so difficult and it’s truly excruciating (a word that I saw Siri use to express how she felt about traveling) for us. Today I canceled her boxing session as there is a storm alert with high winds. She is still in bed. “Sleeping in” which is what she wants to do once she transitions from home to her own place on the ranch. We are thinking of making some changes in her school placement as we move forward with her desire of becoming a neuroscientist. It’s a hard journey but not impossible. We know that she can do it 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽. It’s so nice to have relatives at home for a few days. My sister-in-law (peddamma) does Siri’s hair almost every day and Siri super loves it. I am not cooking much which means she gets to enjoy delicious food made with tons of love by her peddamma (aunt). Unfortunately my sisters are not involved in her life but my sis-in-law is and that’s very important for me and us. It’s not easy for people to understand special needs families and that’s completely ok with us as only strong and genuinely caring people have the hearts and the time to come alongside of us. I feel that automatically ignorant people slowly fade away and genuine relationships get stronger while living a life of a special needs family. This makes room for us to focus on what’s more important which is caring for our kids especially the ones with special needs. Yesterday after her 3hrs of continuous (no break) doing her assignments at the RPM sessions, Siri came home to a full house of friends and relatives. I woke her up at 7:30am and after three long hours I thought that she would have her lunch and go to her room to rest. But she didn’t. She stayed through the night until 12:15am when everyone left and the kitchen got cleaned up. I was in the kitchen when I heard her responding loudly to someone talking with her. Previously we would tell her to take a break in her room thinking that she is agitated. But not yesterday. I called her into the kitchen to talk with her. I said “nana Siri listen to me” she put both her hands on my both shoulders and with a wide smile and twinkle eyes looked at me. I told her that she has to talk softly so that people will not think that she is upset. Her eyes twinkled and she left. I didn’t hear her voice loud but gentle. I had no idea why I said this to my child on the day Autism got connected to her. “Ammalu na chilakamma, I will make sure what ever the pediatrician said about you just now will not come true, I promise”. Hahaha what did I know about Autism? I heard and also learnt how to spell the word Autism a few hours before this click. A big thanks to her dad for capturing it.
