On this day, 30 June 1960, Congo achieved independence from Belgium following decades of brutal colonial rule which killed 8-10 million people ā half its population.
Belgian authorities used men for forced labour in the rubber industry, having the wives and children of workers who didn't meet their daily quotas dismembered, killed and even eaten.
Following independence, Belgium and other Western powers continued to maintain power and rob the country's rich natural resources. The first democratically elected Prime Minister, socialist Patrice Lumumba was arrested, tortured and murdered on the instructions of Belgium and the CIA, who then installed a brutal dictator.
Pictured is a Congolese man named Nsala, photographed in 1904 by Alice Harris. Cropped from this photo to the left is a hand and foot of his 5-year-old daughter. She was killed and eaten, as was his wife and son, by rubber industry guards as a punishment for Nsala not harvesting enough rubber.
This book gives a detailed history of colonialism in Congo: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/books/products/lord-leverhulme-s-ghosts-colonial-exploitation-in-the-congo-jules-marchal
here is the full photo. in my opinion it very much misses the point to crop it. we don't need to sanitise the horrors of Colonialism.
More background on the photograph, published in 1904 in "King Leopold's rule in Africa": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nsala_of_Wala_in_the_Nsongo_District
one really annoying thing about this american world cup, apart from the extra ad breaks, is they keep showing us fucking celebrities during the game. who gives a shit that beyonce is in the audience. also the dumbass half-time show theyre planning for the final. US culture is such celebrity obsessed ad-riddled garbage.
commentators here are just constantly mocking the fact that there will be a fucking half-time show at the finals, the "hydration" ad-breaks, and also that tickets to the finals cost around ā¬4500,-
if the world cup was supposed to be like a sportswashing excercise for the USA, it has backfired pretty well. First the racist treatment of officials, players and fans by immigration, then the ridiculous open vindictive cheating by the USA by refusing visas for the Iranian team, and then the open corruption of Trump calling up the Fifa to make them cancel that red card for the US team.
A truly pathetic revelation of its national character by the USA. Mexico and Canada have been enjoyed and appreciated by all involved, in contrast.
lol, the Dutch national broadcaster isn't pulling any punches, calling out the corruption, racism, sportswashing and cheating by Trump, including bringing up the Epstein files, discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, and the ICE murders of immigrants. As I said, the USA really used this World Cup to show itself to the world.
Translated article under the cut:
A day before the World Cup final, New York is covered in a thick layer of smog from Canadian wildfires, turning large parts of the northeastern United States gray. A symbolic conclusion to a World Cup that became a celebration of magnificent football in packed stadiums, but was also marked by extreme weather, human rights violations, and political interference.
FIFA critic Jules Boykoff doesn't have to think long about the question of what stood out most for him outside of the sport: "The reversal of that red card, following political pressure from President Donald Trump. I think that will go down in history as one of the biggest controversies in World Cup history."
With a single phone call to FIFA boss Infantino, the president managed to overturn the automatic suspension of American star player Balogun. "You really have to see that as a message to a domestic audience: that he is a strong leader who can keep international organizations in line. He can bend FIFA to his will."
The political scientist calls it sportswashing : using sport for political gain. Boykoff: "Trump does that more than any other modern American president." He believes this cannot be seen in isolation from the upcoming parliamentary elections. "His base is dissatisfied with his war on Iran; there is disappointment regarding the Epstein files. He wants to show that he is still in control."
Many not welcome
A Somali referee who was denied entry, players detained at the border, fans denied visas: the list of absentees was long. "This is a World Cup in a place where the world is not welcome," says Minky Worden of Human Rights Watch (HRW). "While the Haitian team played at the World Cup, hundreds of thousands of Haitians in the US lost their temporary residency status."
"You cannot judge this World Cup without looking at who is missing," says Lily Dong Li Rosengard of LGBTI rights organization ILGA World. "The LGBTI community is conspicuously absent because many people do not feel safe coming to the US."
"A visa is a privilege, not a right," says Andrew Giuliani, Trump's 'World Cup chief'. At a press conference, he tries to counter the criticism. "We have proven that you don't have to choose between welcoming millions of international visitors and keeping citizens and visitors safe," says Giuliani. "Americans fell in love with the World Cup and the world fell in love with America again."
There were fears beforehand of ICE operations during the World Cup. As far as is known, arrests did not occur around the stadiums. But according to Daniel NoroƱa of Amnesty International, the World Cup thus became a distraction from what was happening off the pitch. "Because deportations, arrests, and the unjust and cruel immigration policy simply continued."
Protest against ICE
A few kilometers from the stadium where the final is being played, protests have been ongoing for months at a detention center run by the immigration service ICE. There are concerns about food shortages and access to medication. Detainees also have hardly any access to a fair trial, says NoroƱa.
According to HRW, 55 people have died in ICE detention centers so far during Trump's second term. There have also been fatalities on the streets. "Just last week, two fathers were shot by ICE while on their way to work," says Worden.
Just enjoy
Fans of Argentina and Spain have their own opinions about it. "That red card⦠if our president called, Infantino wouldn't answer," says an Argentine fan.
"He's an asshole, or am I not allowed to say that?" says a Spanish supporter. "I don't think it should be a factor," says another Spain fan about everything that happened off the pitch this World Cup. "We should just enjoy our final, and go for our second star."
Yeah, Iām thinking of you. You scrolling Tumblr to escape your countryās facism and cuddle in fictional characters who helped piece together your identity. You writing a novel thatās secretly a queer metaphor. You in Palestine, Ukraine, Russia, China, Singapore, and my beautiful Vietnam. You in red states and small towns that are swallowing you whole. You stuck in Church basements drowning in positive affirmations meant to change you. You on Grindr and Pornhub trying to be a man. You in a library picking up Flamer, Drama, and Nimona for the first time. You on Queering the Map venting a heartbreak. You kneeling and praying to something you donāt believe. You in the ground because the world was not kind, but you were. You in the chrysalis who deserves to emerge. You who are old and thought things would be better. You who are artists and you who are leaders and you who love and fuck and exude color and life.Ā

Okay, for nine months now weāve all seen firsthand how American media lies and spreads misinformation about the situation in Palestine and whatās really going on over there. Have you stopped yet to consider what other countries American media is lying to you about?

Revolutionaries in Africa understood that the question of African liberation was not just a question of race, that even if they managed to get rid of the white colonialists, if they didnāt rid themselves of the capitalistic economic structure, the white colonialists would simply be replaced by Black neocolonialists. There was not a single liberation movement in Africa that was not fighting for socialism. In fact, there was not a single liberation movement in the whole world that was fighting for capitalism. The whole thing boiled down to a simple equation: anything that has any kind of value is made, mined, grown, produced, and processed by working people. So why shouldnāt working people collectively own that wealth? Why shouldnāt working people own and control their own resources? Capitalism meant that rich businessmen owned the wealth, while socialism meant that the people who made the wealth owned it.
One our greatest living revolutionaries, Assata Shakur, has transitioned to the ancestors. On September 25, 2025, passed away in Havana, Cuba, where she had lived in exile since at least 1984. Beginning her activism in college, Shakur was a foundational member of both the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, where she honed both her revolutionary theory and practice. Targeted constantly by the state, Assata was arrested in 1973 after she and several other BLA members were attacked by state troopers on the New Jersey Turnpike. She and her comrades were injured in the attack, and a state trooper was killed when BLA members returned fire in self defense. Shakur was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1977, but this did not stop her work. She continued to organize as a political prisoner, and she was broken out of jail in 1979 by fellow BLA members and the May 19 Communist Organization. During her years on the run, she was placed on the FBIās Most Wanted List, where she remained until her death. In 1984, Cuba granted her formal political asylum and refused to extradite her, despite relentless pressure from the United States, including a $1,000,000 reward. In 1987, she published her seminal work, Assata: An Autobiography. This work is a foundational text for anyone committed to destroying Western Imperialism and colonialism. In it, she wrote the following words, which have become a rally cry echoed throughout worldwide struggles for freedom.
āIt is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.ā
Mother Assata, thank you for your relentless fight for our dignity and self-determination. We continue on in your honor and legacy. May the ancestors welcome you in warmly. Rest in Power!

Members of the May 19th Communist Organization together with the Black Liberation Army, managed to break Assata Shakur out of jail in 1979, after taking two prison guards hostage. She went underground for several years before finding political refuge in Cuba in 1984.

'As I looked at the stains on the coral, I recalled some of the eloquent phrases of politicians and newsmen about how "gallant" it is for a man to "shed his blood for his country," and "to give his life's blood as sacrifice," and so on. The words seemed so ridiculous. Only the flies benefited.'
