Project 1000x1000. This is a project I worked on for making polymer fibers for N95 masks (here is the ArXiv paper). The project proposes a distributed manufacturing process (rotary jet spinning) as a scalable method to enable manufacturing of N95 grade filter material (a nano-fiber porous mesh). Current manufacturing of N95 grade filter material is centralized and relies on a melt-blown process which can not scale beyond one or two million masks/day per factory. We provide an alternative approach of a medium scale manufacturing (filter material for 10,000 masks per day) and if replicated by 1000 small businesses and groups across the country, would produce enough material for one to ten million masks per day. The photo is of me and my friend, who first-authored the paper, holding the cotton candy-like fibers produced by this method.
Check out my most recent paper on ArXiv about aligning two time-series together using a new method of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). Code will be available on Github soon. The top plot shows two signals that we seek to align by warping time. The middle plot shows the mapping between the two signals defined by the time warping function, phi. The bottom plot shows how the two signals look when we compose signal x with the time warping function; it aligns beautifully with y! You can also do this with groups of signals. All of this (and more) is in the paper.

Just updated my mac to Mavericks and the latest version of R, and poof, nothing works. Turns out that the good folks who make R decided to change the name of program from R64 or R32 to just plain R. If you run into this issue, just update your /usr/bin symbolic link paths and high five your nearest nerd.
add this to ~/.bash_profile and you should be good to go alias r='/Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/R’

Arduino + Open Logic Sniffer...works great.
On the left, is a an old duemilanove with logic sniffer code on it (sniffer), and on the right is another duemilanove (master) wired into a test board for a chip I want to incorporate into a new design (slave). The basic workflow is:
write code for the host (I use textmate)
upload via Arduino app
master starts sending SPI signals to the slave
record these signals using the sniffer board and software
modify code

Hi Dave, I've just discovered, or have I rediscovered something that I had forgotten I started? I have a New Forest & Waterside History research site that I don't remember starting. Even though I would have thought that most if not all, the information is known only to me. I see that it was last updated March 2011. Did I make it or did my computer create it?

hey dave, scratch my last question. i've simplified it to: how does the radiofrequency pulse change the direction of the protons to create the net magnetisation for MRI?
The radio frequency basically uses resonance to excite protons spinning at a certain frequency. That frequency is determined by the magnetic field the proton is in. One the proton is excited, it spins faster and faster until it tips on its side like a top. This is called precession. So, when the proton spins on its side, it creates this oscillating magnetic field in the “transverse plane,” a direction orthogonal to the receiver coil. Basically this becomes like a magnet going inside a coil, which as Faraday proved, induces a current in the coil. But it takes a lot of these protons spinning on their side together, all in the same phase, to make a net signal strong enough to induce a current in the receiver. When they spin out of phase the net magnetic field in the transverse plane decreases, causing the signal to decrease. This can happen when theres local inhomogeneities in the machine’s magnetic field, bone tissue interfaces, or paramagnetic effects of deoxygenated hemoglobin—the latter of which powers the BOLD signal. Sorry to answer so late, I just saw this!

You can hack it. Just start pressing buttons and clicking on things. If you break something, just re-download and try, try again.
Wishing you well on your doctoral studies. My question: How do I get my own calendar into your very nice Research Project template. Of clear the Timeline calendar that is there so I can insert my own dates. It's a very nice template; I wish I had discovered it sooner. However, the calendar is frustrating me right now. Staying anonymous so don't know if I will see an answer this way, but I'm taking a shot at it, as I am already logged into too many social networking sites.
