I never thought I would use the word “mauve” and “fresh” in the same sentence, but here we are. We decided to embrace the existing counters and go for a tone-on-tone look for Phase One – just because why the heck not?! When else do you get mauve counters to work with? After doing five quick & easy updates to our kitchen that made a pretty big difference a few weeks back, we knew that painting the old chipping cabinets would also really go a long way in making this room feel a lot less worn out. So after testing two potential colors on the doors below, we both ended up liking the darker color on the right cabinet that almost exactly matches the counters. The winning color = Sherwin Williams Artsy Pink (we used their “Emerald” paint in a satin finish). And today we’re going to share how the whole cabinet painting project went, along with a couple of other updates we did to our old kitchen cabinets at the same time, including installing hidden hinges – which really did make a huge difference for a nice low price. Here’s the kitchen as it looks right now (yes, we succeeded in our goal to also paint the dishwasher that we mentioned here – and it worked! More on that in a second). And for reference, here’s the kitchen as it looked when we bought the house. I am very excited about this post. And John’s computer froze and crashed two times this morning while we were trying to work on this, and my enthusiasm STILL ENDURES, which is a good indication of just how into this I am. I’m going to try to let the pics do all the talking because I just want to get this post UP AND INTO THE WORLD! So without further ado, here is what our house looked like back in February when we offered on it. Remember it was a super rainy/overcast span of two days when we checked it out (as is our tradition of buying houses – more on that here). Didn’t matter. Look who was very excited back then too: And this is our house as of yesterday morning when we took these pics (just with our phone! Isn’t she lovely?!). Here’s a good progress photo to show some of the stuff we did: mainly reframing the side porch so it’s less chopped up with a million slats of wood, adding a modern horizontal railing to the top deck and the side porch which felt a lot more congruent with the style of this house, and widening the front steps and removing the random old backwards-4 arch as we called it (I’ll wait while you scroll back up to the before shot). We also took the opportunity to replace all the degrading deck boards with Trex. We used it in a different color at the duplex and loved how durable and maintenance free it is (the color we picked here is warm and lovely – it’s called “Havana Gold”). Read the full article

Our Florida house reno is moving right along. Wanna see it?! We do too! That sounds like a joke, but I’m serious. We haven’t seen any of these changes in person yet, so all of the pictures in this post are from our contractor who has been working on our house over the last two months. So please forgive us if some are a little blurry (like the one below) or not exactly the same angle as our before photos. We’re happy to have any pictures we can get! And when we finally LIVE THERE (there’s still not an exact moving date pinned down – but fingers crossed for sometime next week) we’ll share approximately 4378 photos and videos. And that is a promise. Today we’re going to share some major progress that has been made in FIVE different spaces that you saw in the “before” tour (and yes, we saved our favorite for last!). So if you haven’t seen the “before” photos or video tour yet, please check that out first. It will help this post make a LOT more sense. This house is in no way going to be finished when we move in. Most of the renovations so far have been focused on getting it to “livable” (you know, a functioning HVAC system, plumbing repairs so the toilet can actually flush, no more holes in the floor, etc). We also found out along the way that we had to replace all of the drywall downstairs (due to some old water damage). Read the full article

Well, we’ve almost been in this house for a month. How crazy is that?! We moved on the 14th of last month and this Sunday is the 14th again! The pod is all unpacked and picked up (you can listen in here about what the heck we overpacked & then donated when we got here). It’s so crazy that a single pod of stuff can be too much – but then again, John was a pod-packing champion. Like too good at it. And going from 14 rooms to 6 (and 3150 square feet to 1400) is not a small challenge. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. This was a multiple month long undertaking. But it was SO WORTH IT. In a nutshell: we don’t miss anything that we don’t have anymore and we’re feeling so much lighter and loving it. Highly recommend. Ten stars. My biggest advice for anyone else who is majorly downsizing = get rid of even more than you think you need to on the front end, because you never miss it on the back end. We also talked about the part of moving into a smaller home that we didn’t expect in that podcast episode, so it’ll catch you up a ton about the actual mechanics of the move, how we settled in, what surprised us, etc. But let’s get into the fun visual stuff: a bunch of photos of our kitchen/dining room/random little seating area as it looks right now. This is one large room that creates a multi-functional common area in the middle of our main floor. Read the full article

Last week we showed you how things landed in our kitchen, just using the furniture and things that we already own. And this week we’re sharing how it’s looking upstairs. This is quickly becoming one of our favorite rooms because it has windows on ALL FOUR SIDES. Not only does it get tons of great light, but it also gives us views of the greenery outside at virtually every turn. We knew we wanted this room to be a nice big shared family space that we could all spend lots of time in together (instead of breaking it up into a bedroom/bathroom for us or two bedrooms/bathroom for the kids) and it has been working so well as a family room + workspace. We also didn’t love the idea of the kids having to go upstairs or downstairs to get us in the middle of the night if they needed us, because that still happens sometimes, so us all sleeping on the same floor and having this awesome light filled space upstairs to spend time in during the day and into the evening has been great. See that big double window with the transom window above it in the photo above? That’s perfectly centered in the room, and you can see that we created two different areas that are basically each half of the space (a living area on the right side, which is defined by that nice big area rug – and an office/art/work area on the left side of the room). For context, that gray rug is 8 x 10′ and the sofa is a whopping 93″ inches long. So this room is BIG. Read the full article

Yesterday marks two months since we moved, and our bedroom was probably the last room to make the transition from “dumping ground of things to unpack” to “comfortable space that feels like ours.” So here’s where things are currently – and what’s still ahead of us (including some bad photoshop to give you a peek inside our heads). If you recall from our before tour, this space was originally a living room (with another much larger living space upstairs with a nice big deck off of it). Since we quickly realized that we’d rather share that larger room & deck as a family, and sleep on the same level as our kids, we knew this room would be great as our bedroom. It also had a natural spot to add a closet & an ensuite bathroom… all we needed to do was close off that big doorway and add a door to the smaller opening beside it: Just to save you from scrolling back up… voila: Fun fact: this entire house only had two rooms with doors that you could close for privacy: our daughter’s room and the bathroom. So it’s a pretty big improvement to have a proper bedroom for ourselves with a door that closes (and a door for our son’s room while we’re at it!). It’s also just generally exciting that our bedroom is becoming the light-filled cozy space that we pictured during that rainy day walk-through in February. Especially since the majority of the items in the room are things we already owned.   Our only major additions have been the rug, the bed frame, and the curtains. Read the full article
