part two - the beach

we got some juice in the café at the bottom of the lighthouse, and moved on to the beach. (apple, rhubarb and elderflower) 

denmark is all about sustainable energy, and in the west, wind power is all the rage. there are little crops of wind turbines all over the place, and while some are pretty big, these ones were huge. 

the log thing i'm standing on is an art instalment made of brass, which i was told was probably going to be quite hot to the touch

CLEARLY my hosts have never experienced a scorching basketball court in the middle of february in townsville (never forget the time clare's shoes melted onto the court) 

the last picture is atop the troldbjerg (literally: troll hill), where there's a ship's mast that's built into the ground, which used to be used to show sailors which part of the town they could sail into to avoid congealment congestion, and also to indicate weather and water conditions. there are also a couple of concrete bunkers on the hill, built toward the end of WWII.

part one - the lighthouse

day two in hvide sande

[day one was spent driving and at the confirmation of a girl called helle]

hvide sande is a fishing village on the west coast of jutland, denmark. it sits between the north sea and the ringkøbing fjord. from a personal perspective, i quite enjoyed my stay in hvide sande; it felt like a family holiday, despite the fact that two of the three people i stayed with i'd only just met this past week

after a quick chat with the gang to wish jake tillykke med fødselsdagen, we went on a trip around town. first stop was this lighthouse, which was constructed in 1906 (a fact which i was notified of by way of inscription above the entrance), which is quite young for a building in denmark, and quite old for a building in australia. climbing it, i had flashbacks to when i climbed up a shot tower in tasmania, and a lighthouse in victoria (i think, my memory's a bit hazy)

25/01/2014 - the harbour is icing over and the next week should be cold enough to keep it that way. on the walk home we saw some kids walking on the little lakes near the house, and my host dad tried to convince me to join them.
