I was wondering what you thought of people being kin with your characters? Is that okay or not?
i’m fine with it. the way I see it, any work is a bit of a dance between author and reader; it’s already kind of a personal thing, reading a story, and everyone’s reading and conception of a thing is slightly different, so there are as many versions of my characters out there as there are people who read it, you know?
I only speak for me, though. I get why people are uncomfortable with it. I think it gets out of hand where people start thinking that their interpretation is the irrefutably correct one and start yelling at the author or like being rude to other people who like the same thing. and I also get why some authors aren’t into it, because your characters come from you and it also feels weird to have someone tell you that you have that kind of power over their sense of self. it’s jarring. ultimately though it’s not that much power, especially not coming out of webcomics.Â
anyway, this is a musing way of making my point but there it is. I think kin stuff is a really interesting subculture, there’s a ton of nuance to it that I don’t really get, but I think it’s neat. I’m lucky enough to have never had the kind of readership that breeds super bad behavior, and it’s charming to think people are out there being one of the ants or something, it’s nice. you do youÂ
