#this is probably the moment i find saddest and most heartbreaking in this film#as opposed to the more overt ‘she’s being mistreated’ scenes#because it’s after the ball - everything’s over#she’s been discovered#and whereas before she had hopes of changing her life now she KNOWS that’s significantly less likely#and she explains her situation to herself by acknowledging ‘all the happy parts of my life are now in the past’#i had a happy childhood where i was loved but that’s past#i met someone and had a wonderful time with them but that’s also past now#i’ve put them away in a cupboard as memories of good things that once happened in times that are finished#she knows all her life will be now is labour and harsh words and probably just this attic at the end of every day#for the rest of her days to come#but good things happened to her once when she was young#‘she knew that the ball and her time with the prince would become beautiful distant memories’#‘like those of her father and mother and her golden childhood’#it’s this clear-eyed facing up to what her life will be and what it will NOT be#to look on the idea of happiness as something solely associated with the past while she waltzes around by herself#sad and at the same time determined not to lose the idea of what was once good simply because she is sad now#it’s a specific kind of stoic courage#when faced with the certainty of suffering#to remember happiness with fondness while surrounded by people who actively WANT her to be unhappy#cinderella#i love all cinderellas but this one holds a special place in my heart (via @harrietvane)
