He was surprised that he had actually opened his mouth and contributed to the conversation. Usually, these interactions had a pattern, he would say nonsense and just lead her down the path for both of them to yell at each other. âI do.â He replied confirming his earlier words, perhaps that would get her to see the reality of the situation, or at least some part of it. Jeremiah had never intended for Caitlyn to think that any of this was her fault. He knew that his instant wall did not make sense to anyone on the outside. It was times like these that he was thankful that he didnât care what others thought about him. âWhich is what I am trying to do right here Caitlyn. We jumped into something and I mean that we both did that. But at the end of the day we donât have any foundation â so when the hits start to come we have nothing to land on,â And not to mention that he didnât know her, just like she didnât know him. They had to start somewhere, and he reckons that perhaps this was the best place to do just that. Though perhaps down the road he would change his mind about such a thing. Opening up was not a gesture that the vampire was used to doing. It had taken him centuries to open up to Alina and Callista, and now that he had he forgot how it had just exactly taken place. He could trust Callista, and he knew that Callista could handle whatever was thrown at her versus the woman in front of him that he just thought of as a glass figure, as something that was too delicate to even be in the same room as himself. He bit inside his cheek, peeling a piece of the skin knowing that he had already opened up the door so he better just be honest, âI donât know how to be a friend to someone knew â ok? And not someone like you. Clark till this day will tell you that weâre not friends â Alina and I for the longest time just fucked and now we just kill people and do pranks â and Callista â she is perhaps the one that I do trust and have let in but she had to be fucking smart cause before I knew I was doing that it was too late â April is probably the youngest semi-friend I have and even at that I keep her at armâs length.â What he was trying to say was that he didnât know how to really do friendship with someone that actually wanted to know him â and even worse that wanted to know the dark and light sides to him. Caitlyn had never been one to pick two or three elements that she enjoyed of the vampire. She was always all in and that terrified the vampire. âSheâs stronger than she thinks â time will heal the wounds â or some shit like that. There we go. While I was gone?â He had to go through all his actions and determine what he could tell her and what he couldnât tell her. âI ended up travelling to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. â Threâs that.â
None of it made any sense, half the time what Jeremiah said and what he did were so conflicting they made her head spin endlessly, though perhaps heâd simply had that affect on her to begin with. Despite that, in all the time sheâd known him, sheâd slowly but surely begun to understand it was better for her if she took the things he said with a grain of salt, before he trampled all over her heart again. âJer, itâs fine..--- You donât have to.. We donât have to talk about this, really. I know all of it, and I agree, you know?â She knew without any sliver of doubt that he struggled opening up, and she supposed somewhere along the line she just accepted the fact that he wouldnât let her in, and yet there he was, changing the game again by giving her some insight into how he saw things between them; and without an argument it seemed like some feat. So much so that it shocked her into silence. âI donât think we were given much of a choice really..---â It didnât make much sense but she shook her head and reached for another drink. âEverything that happened back then was kind of.. everything just happened and I guess neither of us knew what to do with it other than jump into it. Itâs okay, thereâs nothing wrong with that, but obviously things have changed â Her life had been nothing but chaotic in the year after sheâd met him, she hadnât been given a moment to breathe, and though she didnât know much about what was going on in his life, she might have almost been sure it hadnât changed for him either. But they were here -- and she was alive, which was more than what most people had given her credit for. Sheâd survived, and time and time again sheâd proven that despite her soft heart, she could do this without breaking. In all honesty, she hadnât expected anything more from him, and yet --- in the first time in so many years, he seemed to be the one with a thousand things to say. âSomeone like me.â She smiled at that, genuine despite the fact that she almost didnât understand what that meant anymore, her good heart had been tainted many times in the passing years, perhaps not as much as his.
Though her undead heart clenched slightly at the mention of her once best friend, Caitlyn knew that Jeremiah and Aprilâs friendship was likely something that they both needed, and sheâd never think to poison it, not that sheâd ever really have it in her to try it. He deserved to have a friend like April. âLook, I know that..-- this is probably harder for you than it is for me,â A stark difference to before heâd left, âbut we donât have to be friends, we donât have to label it or call it anything at all. We can just..-- know each other.â Perhaps it was Caitlyn selling herself short, didnât she deserve to at least call it a friendship? Her accommodating nature however, paved the way for other peoples comfort, it always had. That was who she was. âWe donât have to be anything, not if itâs going to make you uncomfortable. Thatâs not what I want, at all.â Whatever happened between them -- everything or nothing, it would always be at his pace. Caitlyn already knew the worst of it -- or at least heâd told her about it, sheâd seen him during the nights the barrier surrounded the town, and sheâd never been afraid of him like that. Her acceptance of everything he was hadnât come easily, but it had happened regardless, and though sheâd hated him with a vibrance at one point, knowing what she had known about him made it easier to love him --- to know that heâd been able to be so soft with her when he was anything but was.. intoxicating. A fact which she refused to get caught up in now, to guard her own heart instead of wearing it on her sleeve. âHawaii? What on earth were you doing in Hawaii?â She could only think of how irritated her skin might have grown from the sun. âYou know, Iâve never actually been to the beach or even seen the ocean before. Iâm not even going to ask if you got any photos because well... youâre you.â
