“We discussed a lot about how we could flesh out the basic point that the triangle is not just two people after one, but the corners touch together all the time. You’re not jealous of your girlfriend or your boyfriend. You’re jealous because you’re not chosen by one and you’re losing the other.” — Luca Guadagnino, about ‘Challengers’ for The New York Times

“finally a worthy opponent…”
one of my favorite parallels this season
Eli and his Matching Outfits
when he first got the mohawk, he wore gray. symbolizing that he’s changing it up however he doesn’t know exactly who he is yet. i mean at this point he doesn’t even know if it will work.
the matching of the blue.
he’s gained a lot of confidence.
he knows more karate.
he knows who he is becoming.
when he changes it to red,
he’s a lot angrier.
a lot of black and red.
he’s consumed by rage.
he takes every attack personally and will get his revenge.
i love the outfit choices here because they’re specifically matching each other except Demetri’s yellow is outside and Hawk’s yellow is inside. Yin and Yang finally coming together, working together.
we don’t get much of him in purple but i definitely believe this symbolizes a happier version of him.
knowing who he truly is and not being influenced by Kreese.
making amends with his peers and turning over a new leaf.
back to gray.
not knowing who he is anymore.
not going to school. not going to karate practice. he’s lost.
having the hood up symbolizes the losing of his confidence. whereas before with the blue mohawk he was gaining the confidence.
i wanted to include this even though he’s not wearing his own clothes. this is another turning point for him. no more mohawk but the confidence is returning. this is who he is, both eli and hawk.
i cant wait to see what he wears next season now that the mohawk is gone. i guess anything goes now. he doesn’t need to match it anymore. i’m hoping to see a more confident colorful no mohawk eli in season 5.
bonus:
i also noticed he wears a little more gray as well in season 4 even before the mohawk shaving. at the beginning, when he and the rest of eagle fang walk into myagi-do, he wears a gray jacket and in this scene. gray tends to symbolize him finding himself which makes sense since he left CK and he’s trying to make amends with everyone. he’s been angry for so long that he’s still trying to process who he is without cobra kai as his entire personality.
“I think with Mark, up until the end, [Eduardo]’s hoping at some point Mark’s going to go, ‘Look, I’m really, really sorry, man. I really messed up. I love you so much, and I just was jealous of you for this. And I acted out like this. Can we be friends again? I’ll give you back as much money as you want. Let’s move in together and we’ll play basketball every day, and we’ll cuddle at night and watch reality TV.’ Part of Eduardo in those depositions is just waiting for that moment.“
-Andrew Garfield on Eduardo during the depositions.
“Ten years in, The Social Network has held up infinitely better than the internet idealism running through so much of the criticism that was aimed at the film at the time… The film didn’t predict the role Facebook would play as a vector for misinformation and political manipulation and an incubator of conspiracy theories and extremist groups. It couldn’t foresee the degree to which the company would shape modern global life while attempting to avoid having to take any ownership over the unwanted consequences. What it did understand is that the desire to disrupt the establishment isn’t the same thing as the drive to build something better in its place.”
