I watched āI became the main role of a bl dramaā this year after not being interested for like a year. And. Let. Me. Tell. You. I regret not finding it sooner!!! It genuinely turned into one of my favorite BL dramas ever. And I will list the reasons why:
1. The premise is so good! Itās nothing complicated but it makes for some good drama. Iām a sucker for a professional/serious/cool guy going crazy for his crush/idol! I wish I didnāt see any videos about that ātwistā just so I could have a genuine reaction to the reveal, it would be so funny. Itās also a type of misunderstanding trope that is actually believable and doesnāt annoy me! Akafuji being embarrassed about being Aoyanagis fan makes sense, and Aoyanagi mistaking Akafujis shyness for him disliking him makes sense and creates some great tension. You just really want to root for both of them!
2. The physical comedy is SO GOOD. I remember enjoying the comedy in the show in general, but I have to give Abe Alan props for the fanboying scenes. HOW does one do a summersault with no hands, while holding a phone???? I donāt know, but it cracked me up so much. His physical acting and line delivery throughout the episodes were a huge highlight.
3. Aoyanagi is genuinely such a cute and sweet characterš. He just gives off such a kind and soft vibe that makes me understand why Akafuji would fall for him. HIS SMILE, HIS VOICE, HIS ACTS OF KINDNESS, THE WAY HE JUST WISHES TO BE LIKED. Like come ooon heās so sweet. His insecurities are also very realistic and relatable, which I believe helps with liking the character more. Like I said earlier, you canāt help bit root for him and hope he sees his own talent!
(The scene in season two when Akafuji says he loves Aoyanagi more than anythingā¦. Aoyanagis reaction was SO CUTE and genuine likeš¢. I just started giggling and kicking my feet.)
4. Their love feels REAL!
In a lot pf BLs I watch, even some of mye favorites, I donāt really believe in their feelings?? Like I know they will end up together, so I canāt do mich but root for their relationship, but in a lot of love confessions I realize these are actors reading a script, not a real proclamation of love. I donāt know if it makes sense, but I donāt always feel like the confessions are genuine?? I am happy they are together, but at the same time the affection or relationship feels stiff and not real.
What made me realize that, was the scene where Akafuji almost confesses to Aoyanagi on the staircase. Itās such a warm scene. Them jumping around with each other, Akafuji listing all the kind things Aoyanagi does for him, Akafujis excitement, Aoyanagi smiling and laughing with him. It really warmed my heart, it felt so genuine and real. I legit almost cried because I was so happy for them. I was happy they found each other and for the comfort they gave each other. I actually donāt think any BL has made me feel such a genuine connection between the two leads before. It was such a strange feeling, but I absolutely loved it, and wish I could watch that scene for the first time again ;).
That feeling was also present after they start their relationship. First of all, Aoyanagi calling Akafuji handsome was kinda shocking?? But in a good way. As a viewer I feel like you would expect the more shy, quiet one to receive every compliment and get flustered, but Aoyanagi being the on to initiate the flirting, and wanting to get to their ānext stepā in the relationship, was a pleasant surprise! I also love how straightforwardly and casually he went about it. Like, of course you want to compliment and flirt with your partner! (Akafujis reactions to both the scenes were so iconic too. Like imagine your literal BOYFRIEND making a move is what makes you pass out š) Aoyanagi taking care of Akafuji is also present after the relationship, like when he passed out at the sauna. He wasnāt embarrassed about putting Akafujis head on his lap, and just wanted to help him. Itās really the small things that make me appreciate their relationship.
(Now of course, Akafuji is more flustered about the flirting and affection, but I think it makes sense when heās been such a huge fan for so long.)
I wanna write more but I am really tired lmao. This is an incredibly informal āreviewā, and itās very sloppily written, but I jst love talking/writing about BLs, and I donāt have anyone to talk about them with irl, so I just wanted to get it all out!
I have watched a good amount of BL dramas and really want to write something like this about my other favorites.
Here are my current favorite BLs in no particular order:
Kabe Koji, the man who defies the world of BL, Cherry magic, the eight sense, my love mixup(jp), life! Love on the line, semantic error, mr. Unluckyā¦, the journey ti killing you.
Honorable mentions: antique( korean movie. Not a BL rlly, but there is a gay character, his sexuality is part of the plot. Very good movie!) and Yuri on Ice(since itās more sports focused, but it has an absolutely amazing queer storyline. Those who deny that Vikturi is canon can argue with a wallā¦)
I am currently having a similar experience with āOssans loveā, where I for some reason never felt like watching it first the longest time, but when I watching it finally I realize that I missed a goldmine! Itās not my absolute favorite, but itās better than I thought itād be, and I am enjoying it a lot!
