The scent of damp earth and fresh grass floated in the night air, after weeks of relentless pursuit through the forests of Valaquia, silence had finally returned. The hordes of night creatures that had escaped from the remnants of Dracula's army had been suppressed, and the swords, at long last, rested in their sheaths.
You walked a couple of steps behind Alucard, watching his long dark cloak billow gently in the night breeze, his posture, as always, was impeccable, a testament to his aristocratic upbringing that not even the mud of recent battles could diminish, the silvery glow of the full moon filtered through the treetops, illuminating his platinum hair, which fell like a waterfall of silk over his shoulders.
"We have arrived," he announced, stopping dead in his tracks, his voice, a soft and deeply melodic baritone, cut through the murmur of the wind.
Before you, a small clearing opened on the hill a hidden corner of the world that seemed immune to the devastation plaguing the rest of the land. From there, the view of the valley was immense, a sea of shadows dotted by the distant flickering of torches from a village sleeping in peace, thanks to the efforts of you both.
"It is beautiful, Alucard," you said, letting out a long sigh of relief that you had been carrying for a while.
He turned to look at you, his golden eyes, usually weighed down by a millennial solemnity and a hidden sadness, softened as he noticed the exhaustion in your features, a hint of warmth, almost imperceptible to anyone who did not truly know him, gleamed in his gaze.
"I promised you I would find a suitable place once the task was concluded," he said in a formal tone, though devoid of any coldness. "You have fought bravely and deserve a proper rest, it is not like me to break my word."
With grace, Alucard knelt on the grass, from his own luggage, he pulled out a thick, dark wool blanket, spreading it over the ground with precise, fluid movements. There was no rush in his gestures; time, which usually felt like an eternal burden to him, seemed to have stopped in favor of the two of you.
You sat on the blanket, stretching your legs with a groan of satisfaction that made you blush slightly, Alucard, maintaining his stoic bearing, took a seat beside you, folding his legs with a fascinating tranquility, yet keeping a prudent and respectful distance.
"I hope the contents are to your liking," he commented as he opened the basket you had prepared so diligently before the last skirmish began. "My knowledge of current human gastronomy is... somewhat picturesque, as Trevor frequently reminds me, but I took special care to keep these provisions intact during the journey."
A small smile curved your lips as you recalled the usual sarcastic bickering between the dhampir and the vampire hunter, you took out a loaf of homemade bread still wrapped in cloth, a piece of cured cheese, wild berries you had gathered along the way, and a small bottle of wine you had obtained from an allied tavern.
"It is perfect, truly," you said, breaking off a piece of bread and offering it to him. "You donβt have to apologize for anything, in fact, I am surprised you agreed to this, i thought you would prefer to return to the castle and lock yourself in your library."
Alucard accepted the piece of bread affectionately. Although his hybrid nature allowed him to survive without the strict need for human food, he ate out of courtesy and, above all, out of a deep desire to share these small rituals with you, it was his way of clinging to the humanity that his mother, Lisa, had loved so much.
"The knowledge within books will always be there," he replied, taking a subtle bite of the bread before continuing. "However, moments of peace are fleeting, i have learned, sometimes the hard way, that ignoring the present in favor of isolation only breeds a sterile melancholy, besides... I enjoy your company, your presence is a constant reminder of why I chose to protect this world."
Your cheeks flushed with a faint blush. Alucard was not a man of empty words or exaggerated flattery, when he said something like that, he did so with an honesty so transparent it disarmed any defense, his maturity and stoicism made every display of affection, no matter how small, feel like an invaluable treasure.
The next few minutes passed in a comfortable silence, broken only by the crust of the bread and the sound of wine being poured into a pair of simple wooden cups, you observed the dhampir's profile as he gazed toward the horizon, there was a heaviness in his shoulders the remnant of having to raise his sword against his own kind, against his father's legacy.
"Does it still hurt?" you asked softly, regretting breaking the harmony of the moment, but genuinely concerned for his emotional well-being.
Alucard did not tense up, but his golden eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the wine cup in his hands, watching the moon's reflection in the crimson liquid. He knew perfectly well what you meant.
"The inheritance of pain is something a dhampir must learn to coexist with," he answered in a measured voice, weighing each word carefully. "My father's blood cries out for vengeance and isolation; it whispers to me that humanity is a lost cause, prone to self-destruction... But my mother's memory... her compassion, is a beacon that dispels that darkness, killing my own kind is a tragic necessity, not a point of pride."
He turned to you, and the vulnerability on his face made your heart ache, the great and feared Alucard, the invincible warrior who struck terror into the hearts of vampires, showed himself before you as a soul simply seeking redemption and a shred of warmth in a hostile world.
"But when I am with you," he continued, his voice dropping to an almost inaudible whisper, "the noise of that internal battle falls silent, i am not the monster humans fear, nor the traitor vampires despise. I am just Adrian, and that is a gift I do not know how to thank you for."
Without a second thought, you closed the distance between you on the blanket, you placed your hand over his, which rested on the fabric, his skin was unusually cold a physical trait of his vampire side but your warm fingers intertwined with his without hesitation. Alucard gave a slight start, surprised by the boldness of your gesture, but he did not pull away, on the contrary, he turned his hand so his long, pale fingers could seek the warmth of yours.
"You have nothing to thank me for, Adrian," you said, deliberately using his birth name, you knew how much it meant to him to hear that name devoid of hatred or fear. "Being here is my choice, i care about you, not your lineage, your powers, or your titles... Just you."
Alucard's face, usually an indecipherable mask of aristocratic serenity, cracked completely to give way to an expression of profound tenderness, a tiny but genuine and dazzling smile appeared on his lips. It was such a beautiful sight that you swore it eclipsed the beauty of the moon itself.
"You are a fascinating woman," he murmured, tilting his head slightly to one side. "Humans are so fragile, so exposed to the inclemencies of time and life, and yet, you possess a spiritual strength that rivals the walls of my castle."
The cold of the night began to intensify as the early morning made its way, a slight shiver ran through your body, a detail that did not escape the dhampir's sharp senses, without a word, Alucard gently let go of your hand, unfastened the silver clasp securing his imposing dark cloak, and draped it over your shoulders.
The fabric was heavy and emanated a subtle scent of ancient incense, oak wood, and the freshness of the night, you wrapped yourself in it, immediately feeling how your own body heat was concentrated thanks to the thick fabric.
"Thank you," you said, smiling from inside the garment that was far too large for you.
"I will not allow my guest of honor to fall ill due to a carelessness on my part," he replied, with a hint of that formal and slightly dry humor that so thoroughly characterized him. "It would be an unpardonable stain on my reputation as a host."
"Oh, of course, the great lord of the castle cannot allow etiquette to be broken," you teased, giving him a gentle nudge with your shoulder.
Alucard let out a low laugh a sound so rare and precious that you stored it in your memory like a treasure, he settled a bit closer to you, allowing your shoulder, wrapped in his cloak, to rest against his, the physical proximity was comforting, despite the difference in your natures, in that forest clearing, you seemed to fit together perfectly.
You took a strawberry from the basket and, with a playful impulse, held it up to his lips.
"Try it, they are sweet, i gathered them near the river this morning."
Alucard looked at the fruit and then at your eyes, there was a brief pause in which his upbringing seemed to debate whether accepting the gesture was appropriate, but the warmth of the moment overcame any protocol. He leaned forward and, with extreme delicacy, bit the fruit from your fingers, taking care that his fangs did not graze your skin, he chewed slowly, savoring the tart sweetness of the fruit.
"Indeed," he nodded with solemnity after swallowing. "It is excellent, though I must admit the credit belongs to you for knowing how to choose the exact moment of its ripening, my father used to say that humans wasted time, I believe you simply understand the value of every second because you know your time is limited, that makes you appreciate the small things with greater intensity."
"And are you learning to appreciate them too?" you asked, glancing at him.
Alucard grew thoughtful, watching the stars twinkle in the black sky, his hand sought yours once more beneath the cloak, squeezing it with a gentleness that contrasted with the immense physical strength he possessed.
"I am trying," he confessed honestly. "For a long time, after... the events with my father, the world seemed like a gray canvas to me, an endless cycle of violence and restorative sleep, but this picnic, this shared silence, the warmth of your hand... They show me that there is beauty in vigilance, that it is worth staying awake."
The accumulated exhaustion from days of combat began to take its toll on your eyelids, which felt heavier and heavier. Your responses grew shorter, and your head began to tilt unconsciously. Alucard, noticing your fatigue, moved delicately to offer you a more comfortable support.
"Rest," he instructed you in a soothing murmur. "I will keep watch, no danger will come near you, I assure you."
Without offering any resistance, you rested your head against his firm chest, you could hear his heartbeat slower and more measured than that of an ordinary human, yet steady and full of life, the scent of his clothes and the security transmitted by his mere presence enveloped you completely.
Alucard stretched his free arm over your shoulders, drawing you a little closer to him in a protective and chaste embrace, with his long fingers, he began to stroke your hair with a meticulous slowness, untangling the small knots that the forest wind had formed, his movements were so gentle, as if he feared breaking you, conscious of your mortal fragility, yet filled with a pure and profound devotion.
"Sleep, my dear companion," the dhampir whispered into the void, making sure you had already drifted off. "Thank you for bringing light into the immortality of this lonely monster, i promise that as long as I breathe, there will always be a safe place for you by my side."
The moon continued its slow transit across the night sky, bathing the two figures on the hill in its silvery light, there, far from the chaos, the swords, and the blood curses, Alucard finally found what he had sought for so long, a moment of absolute peace, sustained solely by the love and company of the person who had managed to melt the ice around his heart.
