A copy of a creature in your graveyard, probably

I've decided to take my large backlog of a beloved genre and make a season of it. I will be posting short reviews every time I finish them under the tag #AGS2026. If you wanna talk about any of them, recommend me titles, etc, askbox is open.

The game does have a problem with the curve of its challenges, where if you are making broadly safe bets, you can level such that most actions are not a risk to you. It does eat into the sensation of surviving constant degradation once you hit the mid to late game, when you are finally able to accumulate a significant stockpile of resources, but not so much that I was not drawn to keep playing for the writing and atmosphere. There are a couple free chapters added after launch that pose a greater challenge, and were some of my favorite stories, but the endings one can find before that point are all solid too. I ended Citizen Sleeper with a well-earned fondness for it, and glad it had a sequel that I could play in short order (but we'll get to that). I'd recommend it, and listening to Amos Roddy's superb soundtrack for a good while after too.

Rating: 5/5 Kentucky Route Zero is a beautiful work of magical realist fiction, entwined deeply with its medium, and stunning in its execution. Its main plot roped me in, its diversions enriched it, its varied interludes surprised and delighted me. I loved every character I played as and everyone who traveled with them, and just about everyone they met. I knew their pains with them; I lingered as long as I could. I passed through the familiar and the eerie and emerged longing for more, but ultimately satisfied having experienced an artwork that was what it wanted to be, in all its permutations. If you love interactive fiction, and have yet to give it a play, please do. For all the regrets littering the side of the Zero, the only one I found is that I cannot experience it for the first time again.
