Is a sehlat to you the way a vulcan is to human?
That is a much better metaphor than how I would explain it. Although...I don't share a common ancestor like humans and Vulcans do, we do share a lot in common.

I certainly do, definitely NOT a space bear! (By the way, bears are welcome on the U.S.S. Enterprise as long as they behave themselves :)
There are a number of excellent species in the botany lab including blackberries, blueberries, gooseberries, strawberries, raspberries, klorbberries, Ta’er berries, and even blimberries! Actually, don’t eat those last ones — the last person to eat them ended up in the Med Bay for a week...

I think, personally, I would make an excellent member of any department. Perhaps not engineering, because of the uh...paws. But the 'fleet badge I made is supposedly for command, and I think I would do pretty well with that.

No-one will scorn you for appearing as you are, though if you wish, you may pass as a juvenile sehlat if you acquire prosthetic teeth. However, I do not believe that it would be necessary for you do to so, and you would be causing unnecessary discomfort upon yourself.

I would consider myself a sapient bear from a planet of sapient bears. But I get along pretty well with earth bears as well.
