Cheryl had a few shifts at the diner under her belt. It sickened her to have to be cheery to everyone that walked in. She didnât really try to hide the fact that she turned on the charm when someone would come in and she would need to shift into service mode.
A disgustingly cute couple walked in the door for a date tonight. She tucked her phone away and put on a smile for them. They asked for a booth. Walking them to one of the booths by a window, she set the menus down, one on each side, and moved for them to scoot in. They both sat on the same side of the booth. Closing her eyes she rolled them letting out a low huff, and moved the menu from the empty side to the occupied one. Letting them know she would be back in a few minutes for their order just so she could walk in the back to gripe to one of the cooks as she got them glasses of water.
After yelling to Oscar the cook about the love sick couple, as had become customary, she returned to their table with two red cups of water, clearing her throat to break them apart.
âReady to order?â She asked a fake smile on her face as she sat the cups down in front of them.
The man ordered their plates and one milkshake requesting two straws.
âSure thing.â Cheryl said, internally rolling her eyes at this couple trying to create their perfect 50s diner moment. They werenât the first and wonât be the last but didnât mean Cheryl was going to get over it anytime soon. She turned to go put in their order with the kitchen.
âThanks Poppy.â The girl said cheerily before turning and sucking face with her date again.
Cheryl was still getting used to the name Poppy. For some reason people in, and passing through, this town loved to read her name tag and use her name which helped her grow into it more but also irked her. They didnât know her.
This was especially true when Meggi came to visit this week. She had met her once and she was too cheery for her liking still as she asked her how she was liking town and how she was getting along working at the diner. How could one be so welcoming all the time? Does she not get tired of it? She made a habit of using her name in the conversation constantly, or for calling her over to ask her if something in her work looked funny. Cheryl answered honestly and helped her with a few flawed designs.
When she had left Carla gave her a note with a $20. She looked down at it.
Poppy -- Thanks for your honesty and help. It is refreshing even if I don't want to hear it sometimes. A little something for your help.
XX Meggi B
She didn't need her pity, Meggi probably needed this cash more than she did but to keep up the act she tucked it away and thanked Carla for bringing it to her.
#OFF WITH HER HEAD
She checked the board at the coffee shop each morning while getting her daily coffee fix for a few days. There wasnât much in her wheelhouse but the diner was hiring. She did a brief stint at Popâs Chocklit Shop back home before she fell into the family business. It wouldnât be a job she enjoyed, waiting on people, but maybe she could do it a few days a week just to keep up appearances.
Interviewing with the owner she was offered a part time job waitressing starting next week. She agreed to work 3-4 days a week as needed for them. It would be a good way to get to know more people in town without being too obvious, watch what people do when they think no one is looking.
She headed back home to see if her contact had any news for her. Radio silence since she sent her to the sweet Bakerâs house despite her reaching out. Worried, she hoped that didnât mean bad news. Just in case, she put herself on high alert, eyeing her bow and arrow and keeping her ears perked for anyone milling about in the woods near her home.

She picks it up and examines it thoroughly, smelling it before taking a bite. Keeping her face clear of any tells, she chews slowly, savoring the flavor. Itâd been a while since she had something so perfect. Swallowing she finally gives the baker her thoughts.
âBest hand pie Iâve had. Iâll be back to fulfill that sweet tooth craving soon, I am sure of that.â
Watches her as she examines and chews her creation, breathing a sigh of relief when she answers. Not that a complete strangers opinion on her baking would make or break her, she has plenty of people who believe in her around here. âWell thank you. The bakery is almost always open.â Picking up and sliding her a business card âor you can always give me a call and order ahead.â
Takes the card Meggi handed her and plays with it in her hands. âThank you. Is everyone else in town as sweet as you?â
If the answer was yes it was sickening, but also easy to gain trust.Â
Laughs âWell there are some that are and some that arenât. Just like any other town.â Meggi smiled at her in the silence âShould I send the rest of these home with you?â
âIf you wouldnât mind. I donât have much as far as food goes currently.â Laughing nervously she continues âguess I should get going to the grocery store from here and pop into the coffee shop to see who is hiring.â
Meggi grabs a small CC box and places the rest of the pies in them as well as a few miscellaneous treats she had tucked away. She wrote storing and reheating instructions on the box as well.Â
âIf you ever want a home cooked meal I always make too much. Shoot me a text to see if I am home first though.â She slid the box over to her âgood luck on the job search.â
Cheryl takes the box and noticed the writing on it. How cute. She gave a kind smile to her face but rolled her eyes to herself at the whole exchange and how sweet she had to be to make friends as she reached in her bag to pull out a twenty for her. Then hopping up from her seat she grabbed the box in one hand, shaking Meggiâs hand with the other.
âI hope that covers it. It is all I have on me as far as cash goes currently. Thank you. For all your help. Truly. I will probably be back sometime next week.â
She looks down at the twenty in her hand âThat is more than enough and you are welcome anytime, Poppy!â Meggi wanted to welcome her with open arms just like she has with anyone else who has visited her kitchen. She walked her to the door and waved her off as she stepped into her car.Â
Closing the door behind her she turned to see Mac looking at her quizzically. Kneeling to her level she scratched her head âI know Mac. It all gave me a weird feeling too.âÂ
Cheryl gave her a grin at the use of her fake name and followed her through the house to the front door. Making her way to the car she waved goodbye to the sweet baker and sped off to the grocery to pick up food for the next week.Â
âThat wasnât too bad.â she thought to herself, making a note to tell her contact the next person canât be that sweet, she doesnât have it in her.
She picks it up and examines it thoroughly, smelling it before taking a bite. Keeping her face clear of any tells, she chews slowly, savoring the flavor. Itâd been a while since she had something so perfect. Swallowing she finally gives the baker her thoughts.

âThis is the address to a baker in town. One of the homes you sent me. Befriend her. She knows everyone in town.âÂ
Cheryl pulls up to the house in her car and looks at the address her contact gave her, then glanced up at the numbers gracing the pillar of the front porch. Yup. This is it. Itâs, well, quaint. A bakery in a home. She checked to make sure her signature red lipstick was perfect in the rear view mirror before getting out. Walking up to the door she notices a woman sitting in the swing.Â
âHi! Iâm Poppy. I am new in town and someone recommended here for some treats. Correct me if I am wrong but you areâ there was a brief pause before she continued to make it convincing âMeggi?âÂ
She knew she wasnât wrong along with the address her contact sent her a picture. She was smaller than she looked in the picture.
@definitelybakermeggi
Meggi was enjoying her afternoon tea when she saw the red impala pull up. Her heart stopped until she saw the occupant was a red head. Meggi took a moment to compose herself as the redhead stepped out of the car and sat extremely still until the visitor acknowledged her. A flood of relief when she introduced herself, just looking for treats.Â
âOh a newcomer huh? Well come on in.â She opened the door and stepped over the threshold motioning for her to follow. âI usually work on request but I keep a few things on hand⌠and with Valentineâs Day around the corner Iâve been working on some things to give friends.â She explains as they walk into the kitchen. Turning to her she asks âWhatâs your poison Poppy?â
Cheryl follows the baker into the house taking it in. It looks bigger in the inside than from outside. The house was pristine, as well as the all white kitchen. It didnât even look like she used it. She trailed her hand on the countertop and leaned on her elbow on a corner, tapping her nails on it while she talked while she talked to her.
âI thought about calling ahead but-â she shrugged. âI wasnât sure what to order.â
âMy poison? Hmm. Got anything strawberry around?â
âStrawberry?â She thought for a minute scrunching her nose in thought about what she still had an abundance of from this weeks valentineâs experiments. âAh ha!â She moved to the fridge and pulled out a tray of hand pies. âStrawberry heart shaped hand pies!â
Preheating the oven to warm them back up for her she turned to Poppy, her voice laced with curiosity. âSo what brought you to town?â
âStrawberry hand pies sound lovely, no matter the shape.â Cheryl said cheerily.
âAs for what brought me here? The wind?â She laughed nervously. Time to try out her new cover. âNo. I am joking. I graduated college and decided to leave behind everything I know. This seemed as good a place as any to get away.â
It wasnât a complete lie, she had just finished some business courses to help legitimize running things, but she didnât graduate. Things had gone down hill before that and she was forced into hiding.
Meggi laughed with her to help put her at ease. Impressed she had finished school â she definitely didnât look old enoughâ she probed some more as she waited for the pre heat to be done.
âWhat was your major? What are you planning to do for a job in town?â
âBusiness. Management to be exact.â She said it fast enough â always good to have your backstory rehearsed and only be a twisting of the truth. Especially when these small town folk get nosy.
âAs for a job, well, I havenât quite figured that one out. I have saved up enough money to live while I look though. Any ideas of where may be hiring?â It wasnât a lie. She had the money to live for now but she needed to keep up the act, find a job.
âBusiness Management. Well I am sure there are plenty of places that could use it. Thereâs always new shops popping up around here. I know the coffee shop has a bulletin board that people use to post help wanted. That may be a good start.â
The oven had finished preheating and she put the hand pies in to warm a few minutes while she made up tiny batch of glaze to drizzle over them, adding pink food coloring to them⌠because Valentineâs Day.
Watching curiously as she mixed the glaze, she looked like she had been doing this for her whole life, Cherylâs mouth started to water.
âOh yeah the coffee shop in the middle of town?â Sheâd seen it when she explored a little while she was looking at places to live, one of the apartments she looked at was nearby but she never stopped in. âItâs cute. Good coffee?â
âDefinitely good coffee. Although to be honest I donât make it out there much. I usually brew at home.â She points over her shoulder at her espresso machine and coffee maker. âAnd I get my tea blends from my friend the next town over. But itâs definitely a hub to meet people.â
Laughing she thinks to herself about how many people actually met and fell in love there as she finishes the glaze and pulls the hand pies out of the oven.
Cheryl makes a mental note to pop in to the shop and check out the board. Something to keep her busy, take up the spare time she has and maybe make some friends.
âI have to admit those are really cute. But do they taste as good as they look?â She forces a charming smile across her face.
