Irony or: How My Life is A Cruel, But Hilarious Joke
In stark contrast to the last blog that I posted on this page, the entire month of November has been chaos for me, starting the night of Halloween.
I had more than a few paragraphs typed out about the insanity that has happened in the past 30 days, but I erased that because I'm not looking for sympathy or support, I just needed to vent.
In relation to my games, very little has gotten done. I've been spending most of my time either at school, at work, or doing homework. I had to resign from my second job because taking on so much responsibility it was affecting my quality of work in everything. A little late, but things I'm thankful for: Health Family, especially my son Finn Enough money to pay my bills The drive and the skill to do the things I love The reliable friends I have left
Organization, Stress, and Progress
Everything here is my opinion and experience and could be extremely wrong:
ON ORGANIZATION
One huge factor to making consistent progress, and lowering your everyday stress level, is to create a schedule and a routine and stick to it. That is a major factor in which I'm lacking because I go to bed every night at random times, wake up tired, and get a respectable amount of things done, but not nearly the amount that I'm capable of.
I have ADD and it's really difficult for me to focus on a singular item without losing focus, but I've heard from other people who are in the same boat that motivation and focus are fickle, but practice and repetition allow you to do the things you need to do without breaking away to clean the stove so you can cook dinner so you can eat before you do your work so you won't be hungry so it won't distract you from getting work done and leading to 50 other things you "need" to do before something gets finished. Everything feels important and immediate when you are like this and you just have to find ways to break away from your native though process and use muscle memory and familiarity to define your path. Going forward, I'm going to, at the bare minimum, follow these steps to make sure that I at least make a little more progress than I have been in all aspects of my life: M/T/W/Th/F/S
Shower
Eat breakfast
Go to class
Write the daily blog after my first class
Do 1 load of laundry
Calc homework
At least 1 hour of Alternare
At least 1 hour of ONLY playing with Finn
After ALL OF THAT is done, I'll let myself wander the internet and learn new things/watch dumb videos and scroll through Facebook and Twitter
I've already stopped reading the comments on MOST sites, but I need to get it out of my head that my opinion is needed in every situation - sometimes it's okay to let people believe things that are factually incorrect or logical fallacies.
ON STRESS
Lately I've been internalizing all of my big and small problems and causing myself to lose sleep, worsen my quality of rest, and become more irritable. Those are all HUGE issues that need to be resolved. The organization process that I described above will be a huge step towards facing the reality that I need more stability in my life that I currently have, but it'll also allow me to be more effective when I work if I cut back on the stress and start thinking of more positive ways to handle and prevent stressful situations like missed assignments or getting sick. One missed exam leads to more missed class time leading to stress on when projects are due and I don't need any of that in my life. I get that some things are important, but I need to start putting more of an emphasis on timeliness and also just finishing more things in general (games, artwork, homework etc.).
ON PROGRESS
Like I said before, I'm absolutely making significant progress, but I'm confident that my abilities would increase twofold if I lowered my stress levels and got more sleep at night. Money is a pretty big factor though, and doing freelance is what's (barely) paying the bills at the moment. I might have to pick up a "real" job, if just for the consistent pay, but we'll see as time goes on. This will negatively affect my progression in the immediate, but in the long run no being homeless sometimes helps. :P Alternare is tugging along and moving inch by inch. Currently I'm trying to fix and perfect the tree generation algorithm to provide dramatically different, and visually distinct designs that won't be so chaotic that I'm hoping to submit to the IGF Student Showcase, but we'll see what state the game is in by that point. It's looking promising, but I don't want to skimp on my game just to try to make the deadline.
IN RELATION TO THE LAST BLOG
Playing video games while inebriated and dressed as a rogue was fun... the next morning was not. I know know the answer to "TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?!" Turn down for not being sick all day the next day. :P
Things I need to do today:
Go to class
Eat something
Finish Alternare tree generation algorithms
Write two papers
Eat something
Play with Finn
Take a nap
Go to a medival costume party dressed as a Rogue and get sufficiently inebriated
Play videogames while inebriated dressed as a Rogue
Progress
I finally stopped being lazy and fixed the CSS on this blog so that it's not COMPLETELY ugly and broken. Now I just have to commit to updating this at least once per day. It'll be a good way to express my thoughts and to make sure I'm making progress both game-wise and creatively. Sometimes I feel burnt out from making things because I feel stagnant - ensuring that I do at least ONE productive thing a day will help break that destructive cycle.
Look forward to a few different types of posts from here on out, with corresponding tags so that it's easier to keep track of my thoughts and growth:
#blog - Daily blogs and random thoughts - Probably gamedev related, but not always
#devblog - Progress in a game or project that I wanted to post about. The project title will also be a tag (i.e. #Alternare)
#junk - Web-things/Experiments/Sketches/Random bits
#art - Anything artistic that I would do that is beyond a sketch... probably won't happen often :P
