She  finally  shrugs  off  the  feeling  of  embarrassment  to  meet  his  gaze,  finding  some  reassurance  in  the  gentle  motion  of  his  hand  as  they  venture  upon  untouched  grounds.  Her  hands  join  over  her  lap,  her  fingers  play  with  each  other  nervously.  ❝  I  only  hope  it  will  be  good.  ❞  for  him.  After  all  he’s  done  for  her,  giving  herself  to  him  in  return  is  the  least  she  can  do,  she  thinks.  It  will  happen,  she  has  promised.  

She  picks  up  the  little  one  and  sits  him  on  her  lap.  ❝  C’mon,  finish  your  carrots.  ❞  running  her  fingers  through  soft  blond  locks,  she  fondly  kisses  his  forehead.  The  child  protests  faintly.  ❝  look,  look !  Ogon  wants  to  steal  all  your  carrots.  ❞  she  promptly  directs  his  attention  on  the  big  dog  sitting  patiently  under  the  table.  Let’s  give  Ogon  the  carrots,  the  small  one  suggests.  ❝  let’s  do  this,  one  piece  to  you  and  one  to  Ogon,  alright ?  Good  boy.  ❞  she  throws  her  husband  a  look,  ❝  are  we  leaving  one  for  Lewis ?  ❞  she  teases,  and  with  a  chuckle  the  little  boy  firmly  shakes  his  head.  Yulya  parts  her  lips  in  fake  surprise,  ❝  poor  Lewis !  why  not ?  Just  a  small  bite.  ❞  another  giggle  leaves  the  boy’s  lips,  his  negative  reply  is  confirmed  with  a  certain  amusement,  he  hurries  up  to  finish  what’s  left  in  his  plate.

❝  I  know.  ❞  she  murmurs.  Ashamed,  guilty,  she  keeps  her  head  down  to  avoid  meeting  his  gaze.  She’d  want  to  explain ;  it’s  not  his  fault,  it’s  not  him.  She’ll  flinch  startled  at  the  slightest,  unexpected  touch,  she’ll  lock  her  door  at  night  and,  if  feeling  threatened,  she’ll  defend  herself.  Yet  to  live  in  fear  has  never  been  her  conscious  choice.  But  instead  the  words  get  trapped  in  her  head  without  finding  their  way  out  ---  she  wouldn’t  be  able  to  make  him  understand,  therefore  why  making  the  effort.  So  as  always,  silence  is  her  only  excuse.  ❝  Sorry.  ❞

❝  Ukraine.  ❞  how  nice  of  her  to  ask !  she  thinks.  The  naive  smile  forming  on  the  younger  one’s  features  reflects  her  surprise.  She  feels  the  need  to  elaborate,  digits  take  a  break  from  typing.  ❝  Well,  from  a  small  town,  you  wouldn’t  know  it.  It’s  up,  in  the  east  side.  There  was  war  when  I  left.  ❞  she  proceeds  with  an  odd  lighthearted  carelessness  in  her  voice,  as  the  smile  lingers.  Going  back  is  not  in  the  plans.  Gaze  shifts  back  to  the  screen  of  her  laptop,  back  to  work.  ❝  I  like  it  here !  You  have  a  nice  weather.  ❞

Instantly  she  shakes  her  head  in  a  faint  protest.  It’s  just  another  one  of  her  many  whims ;  unfounded,  irrational.  ❝  No,  I  want  to  touch  the  rain  now.  ❞  and  as  quickly  as  she  burst  into  his  bedroom,  she’s  out.  Rushing  down  the  staircase  and  out  of  his  reach,  driven  by  a  thrill  of  meaningless  excitement.  She  doesn’t  dare  to  wonder  why,  all  that  matters  is  the  feeling  of  wet  drops  crashing  against  her  hair,  making  her  shirt  damp  and  tight  against  humid  skin;  she  laughs.  ❝  Marc !  Come  out,  come  here  with  me !  ❞
