Drugs and alcohol have always been a big thing, we get scared as parents into thinking

                “Oh no what if my child gets caught up in these things?”

The knowledge of the side effects is what creates such concern such as depression, self-harm, crime and even suicide.

However we are aware of the side effects, is it likely that a private act within a room could cause the same if not worse side effects?

Yes.

Research has consistently proven that pornography carries the same effect alcohol and drugs hold. All these addictions carry the same trait of altering the brain in some sort of way.

It wasn’t until recently that they discovered that simply ‘watching’ or ‘viewing’ something could become addictive and effectively alter the gray matter in the brain.

                          Pretty much, more porn = less motivation.

My worry is, porn is just a click away, we can be home and not even know our child is becoming mentally affected by pornography.

Whereas to access drugs, they’ve got to leave the house, find a supplier and then find a ‘safe’ place for the act.

If the average viewing age of porn is 11 years old and is just as addictive and easier to access than cocaine, how can we protect our kids within our own home?

Average age of first porn exposure is 11 years old, and an average age to have first coffee is 14 years.

The internet offers so much to us like reading the news, following our child on Facebook, blogging things happening in our lives and remembering birthdays!

But it also holds things that we couldn’t bear our children seeing let alone ourselves. It scares me to think that my child may be exposed to a pornographic image before they even have their first coffee!

What can we do to this. Apparently, internet filters aren’t doing enough. These images and videos still come through and pollute the innocent minds of our children. It’s easy to install a web filter and assume that the family is safe but are we really?

When I started to research this more thoroughly I stumbled across this static that an average child’s age to have their first coffee is 14 years old, not too young right? But then the average age for our child to see a pornographic image is 11 years old. 

I took away from this all is that we need to be more vigilant in finding better software that can protect our children online AND offline.

Coke, Meth, Ice and the Internet? You may be thinking um… how does the internet even compare to drugs?

Lately I’ve been finding more and more stories on the internet talking about children finding things online that really no one should see.

My distant friend sadly suffered through this at a young age, he was exposed as young as 7 years old to materials that harmed him for life.

When a child that young is exposed to things like that it really begs the question, how does it affect them as they grow older?

It’s funny because we decide the movies, tv shows and music we find appropriate for our kids however, we hand them a smart phone and connect them to whole internet to find anything, even if they don’t mean too.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the internet, I LOVE the internet but I hate the fact that it’s so easy to have our kid’s minds polluted by a simple spelling typo.

I was interested to find out how much it would affect a child at a young age and see the effects it had as they grew up when stimulated with disturbing images.  

I found an article speaking about men from the ages of 19 to 34 having their brains scanned to see the effects that were happening within their brain.

They just happened to find that when stimulated by these materials a section within their brain lit up with the same effects that alcohol and drugs would. Does this mean that these images and videos really cause you to gain an addiction? Yea, I think so.

Going back to my distant friend, he found within his marriage that it was a constant struggle. He couldn’t relate to his wife, he had unrealistic expectations of her and he also resolved to violence.

Sadly, the marriage ended because he was introduced at such a young age to things that are not meant for a child’s mind.

Again, I’m not saying that every child reacts the same way, but just reading the effects it has on our kids it really made me think.
