DGS Rough translation summary spoilers - Case 1
The victim is Dr. Watson. He died at 2 PM, in La Quantos, a restaurant.
The defendant and acting attorney is Naruhodo Ryunosuke, as he declared as per Dr. Mikotoba’s suggestion.
Asougi is Ryunosuke’s assistant.
Cause of death: Blood loss due to gunshot.
Bellboy Satoru Hosonaga is summoned.
Testimony basically says that there is no one else other than the defendant. He gives the floor plans that is scribbled in his name card. Hosonaga looks concerned.
Ryunosuke says that there was someone else beside him, but he has no evidence.
I kind of forget this part orz
Officer Uzukumaru Taizou and Antique Salesman Sonohigurashi Sanmon is summoned. Sanmon is complaining that he lost a treasure - a Koban from the Houei Era.
They basically tell the same thing as Hosonaga. However, there are discrepancies in their testimonies.
Sanmon said that “Dr. Watson was enjoying his lunch” but Dr. Watson’s medical records state that he is not allowed to eat anything other than water post-surgery(he had his tooth extracted, this point is very crucial).
But there was steak on his table, so another person must have ordered it.
Both Uzukumaru and Sonohigurashi seems to be scared to tell the court what really happened.
It is revealed that Bellboy-- Detective Hosonaga coerced them into silence, lest there will be international incident (Just recently, the Great British Empire and Japan has been building up relations). His cover was blown due to Ryunosuke’s acuity for details-- he found his actual profession in his name card. This is the reason Hosonaga was concerned earlier.
Soon, Jezail Brett is summoned. She is the other witness and a transfer student studying under Dr. Watson.
Basically yada yada I could not possibly be the killer etc lol
A hole in the testimony is found when she said she had a toast with Dr. Watson drinking some carbonated water, as the crime scene photo only showed one glass. She said that she brought the glass within her handbag.
Ryunosuke proposed that she concealed the murder weapon within her handbag. Det. Hosonaga rebutted with another photo of the crime scene, showing her bag. Then he broke down feeling that he couldn’t find a lead(I think).
However, he found another strange thing, and that is a strange mark on Dr. Watson’s hand. He linked the burn mark to the raised area of the steak plate (that looks like a cow). He also commented that it would be strange if Dr. Watson did not scream after burning his hand.
He concluded that Dr. Watson was already dead before the gunshot.
Then I forgot around this part again o<-<
Ryunosuke proposes that Dr. Watson must be poisoned, and it might be lying in the carbonated water. Det. Hosonaga however, rebutted by saying that they have examined the contents and there was no trace of poison in the water. Both Asougi and Ryunosuke broke down again. (So many breakdowns in this chapter...)
The judge is ready to hand down the verdict until--
A young woman appears and introduces herself as Mikotoba Susato, Kazuma Asougi’s legal assistant. She asks for 5 minutes and it is approved by the judge, even after Auchi objected.
Susato then hurriedly gave Asougi and Ryunosuke: Jezail Brett’s Report. And she wishes them the best of luck before she leaves.
Both examined the report and it was found that Jezail was researching about poisons, specifically: Curare.
Asougi concluded that Curare was the poison and the reason the criminal investigation had reported nothing--- it is because Curare is a poison that has not been introduced to Japan. In Japan, Curare “doesn’t exist”.
Curare is a poison that paralyzes the entire body. It includes the respiratory muscles as well, that is the real cause of death-- Asphyxiation. Dr. Watson could not scream in pain or struggle as he was paralyzed to death. It explains how the victim did not make any sound.
Jezail then laughed and drank the entire bottle of carbonated water. She was still alive. Everyone was baffled. Once again, the defense broke down at this point (I think).
The trial is not over! Ryunosuke states that for the poison to work, there needs to be an entry wound. Would you look at that, the entry wound is the scar Dr. Watson’s wisdom tooth extraction. It explains why he died, and Jezail was of course privy to the information that Dr. Watson had his tooth extracted.
This part is hazy too so I’m sorry
But Jezail objected, and she says that there was no proof that he died before the gunshot and declared Ryunosuke was STILL the killer. I think the defense broke down AGAIN.
Ryunosuke tries to remember the picture of the crime scene....and he remembered that there was blood in the steak behind Dr. Watson! And he could not be the killer as the bloodstained steak was behind him, and it was Jezail who is able to shoot him to make the blood splatter that way.
Hosonaga said that he kept the evidence and he delivered Jezail Brett’s steak...only to find that there wasn’t any blood. Boom. I have no idea but the defense keeps breaking down...
Ryunosuke examines the steak...and there was a Koban... under the steak?
Hosonaga says that it is indeed a Koban from the Houei Era. But the Koban has no relevance to the case... until Ryunosuke remembered that Sonohigurashi said that his precious Koban from the Houei Era was stolen earlier.
Both Uzukumaru and Sonohigurashi was summoned and it is revealed that Uzukumaru was the thief who stole the Koban. Uzukumaru says that as an army officer, the pay was so low and he had to feed his infant son, Koromaru.
It explains Hosonaga’s statement about a thief recently...
Ryunosuke also noticed that the steak was odd. Jezail wouldn’t eat her steak like that... so who is the real owner of that steak...? It is of course Officer Uzukumaru’s steak. Then comes the question-- Where is Jezail Brett’s steak?
Hosonaga said that he had already retrieved it and shows it to the court. The steak has blood on it! This is the conclusive evidence.
Jezail broke down by going back and forth, dropping lots of chicks and it ends with her flying. She then explained her crime, and later asks for a private conversation with the judge. However, Jezail’s motive is still a mystery.
Ryunosuke is acquitted. Asougi says that he is way more capable than he ever was. Dr. Mikotoba and Asougi has a talk that Jezail’s crime cannot be tried here as the legal system has problems, and there’s another problem regarding the Japan-Great Britain relations. Asougi’s face turns grim... and later Hosonaga says that he is treating everyone to dinner at La Quantos.
Asougi wanted to talk with Ryunosuke regarding “an important request” but it is not disclosed here.
