For me, the most interesting aspect of today’s Forbes #selfmade list are the stories of triumph over adversity - the immigrants who came with nothing, the women of color who overcame great odds. eg Oprah Winfrey, who transcended poverty and abuse to become the most powerful woman in media; Jin Sook Chang, the co-founder of Forever 21 who emigrated to California penniless and with little education; Carolyn Rafaelian who was inspired by her Armenian grandfather’s journey through Ellis Island to create Alex and Ani; Theresia Gouw of Aspect Ventures who emigrated from Indonesia and was one of the few in her high school to go on to higher education; and Sheila Johnson, a violin teacher who went on to co-found BET. #Forbes #Oprah #alexandani #forever21 #BET
