The heady aroma of a newly opened film, the silky smooth wind on lever, the discipline of having limited shots per roll, the anxious anticipation of waiting for the results....all of these things sum up the essence of the film experience.

Ricoh did nearly everything right with the Pentax 17. It’s got the looks, the controls, the feeling, the excitement when you hold it, etc. And they did this through authenticity by borrowing things from their past and even bringing back former film camera engineers to make it all happen.

If fans of film cameras like the tactile nature of the art, Pentax’s designers think they’ll be even happier with a system that doubles down on that.

If you're part of the analog community still representing, using and respecting film, then Ilford's announcement to bring its Kentmere 100 and Kentmere 400 stocks to medium format photographers in 120 rolls is sweet music indeed.

The Pentax KX was the successor to the Pentax Spotmatic F, but it is far more than just a fancy F. Introduced in 1975, it was one of the first Pentax K-mount SLRs. With this new series of cameras, Pentax replaced the screwmount lens type with a bayonet mount system. The K-Series cameras were pretty large and heavy compared to the cameras that came before, but they went on to gain impressive features throughout the 1970s.

“Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.” Pablo Picasso I look at thousands of photos on my workshops. One thing I see regularly is people making images too complicated. When your images are too complex, you are not defining your subject correctly.

It’s nice to have rules, and I find it important to know about its origin to understand why you should use it or not. It also illustrates that using these rules to the letter is often not very artistic. You might end up being more of a mathematician instead of a photographer.

Pentax may not be dead, but they’re certainly not thriving in the same way that Sony, Canon and Nikon are. They’re not even doing as well as Fuji and Panasonic.
