A rush A glance A touch A dance

A rat-tat-tat on my heart…

Today we made Thank You cards for parents to acknowledge all they have done for the children this academic year. Amidst the creative spirits, one kid came up to share his card with me. I praised his sweet note and suggested a few more appreciations he’d might like to include in his special letter. He came back a few minutes later with a long write-up instead. It was lovely and thoughtful coming from a boy I least expected. 

However, I was caught by surprised after noticing his teary eyes as I read the letter aloud. It suddenly dawned on me that this sweet child had been crying while writing this letter to his family. A particular line broke my heart. It said, “It’s okay if I am sad as long as you guys are happy…” I was incredibly touched by his big, pure heart and sincerity. Here before me was a selfless 10-year-old, who understood the meaning of ‘putting others’ happiness before your own’ better than most adults. 

I wiped his tears and gave him a big hug. If only I could chase away the sadness in his eyes.
