Further to the previous articles in Data Center Design Consideration: Space Planning, thermal management is also an important consideration in data center design. As more cloud-based platform and applications developed and the big data trends, the demand for server usage and data storage will grow continuously. As a result, more power is consumed and more heat is generated by the servers and electronics. Proper heat dissipation techniques are therefore necessary to ensure heat is effectively removed from the equipment.
Proper design for data center cooling at least has 3 components:
Mechanical, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (MVAC) Precision System
It supplies and distributes chilled air into the computer room. The MVAC system is designed based on the total heat load of the equipment. Depending on the geographical location of your data center, temperature is typically kept between 20 - 25 degree.
Rack Layout
The TIA-942 standard recommends the use of a hot aisle and cold aisle layout in positioning racks. Racks are organised in rows with an aisle dividing each row of racks. Racks are then installed with either the front or the rear of the rack facing each other along every aisle.
The aisles, which access the front, are designated cold aisles while the aisles that access the rear are designated hot aisles.
With this layout, cooled (fresh) air is introduced into the cold aisles. As the cooled air enters the rack and moves from the front to the rear, it extracts heat from the rack-mounted equipment. At the rear, air is expelled into the hot aisles where they are directed back to the Air Handling Units (AHU) / Computer Room Air-conditioning (CRAC) Units. Using this directed path of air circulation, the computer / servers equipment are effectively cooled.
Rack Design
In order to make the cool aisle / hot aisle layout effective, the rack are required to be carefully installed and designed. It ensures cooled air enters the rack, is forced through the equipment and hot air is expelled from the rack:
Intelligent fan doors for drawing cooled air into the rack.
Blower fans to ensures cooled air is available along the front of the entire rack.
Fan doors and blower fans are used when there are insufficient air entering the cabinet.
Filler panels and air dams for blocking gaps between the front and rear of the rack.
Air diverter kits to divert cooled air upwards which helps air to flow into the equipment and to prevent hot air at the back from re-circulating to the front.

29. next where?.. Is Cyberspace the first threshold crossing step taken towards humanity’s complete identity re-engineering? Surely once the physical technology of biological and mechanical science catches-up, which evidentially it must; then, perhaps issues of gender will be obsolete in the lives of posthumans.
30. where next… Let’s return to Lacan’s Mirror Stage, when the child realizes they are not symbiotically one with ‘the other’, the Imago, the misrecognised ideal of personified mother sustenance; and therefore only have their own deficit internal self to contend with, the Ego, a disappointing and alienating identification. 31. where next… We could ask is Cyberspace the greatest attempt to shatter Lacan’s Mirror and create a schism for the Ego to pass thru and reunite with the Imago? For a reengineered Ego+Imago. Furturist Raymond Kurzweil, renowned for 30 years of uncannily accurate technological (and related) predictions, argues that ‘ technological singularity’ will occur by approximately the year 2040: allowing for complete transformation into the posthuman.

Times Online shock columnist Helen Rumbelow: “ But what of Elliot, the single man from London and (Carolyn’s) Second Life lover? OK, so alarm bells were ringing from the moment … he described the look of his (avatar) – “I just wear jeans and weapons, right now I’m wearing a sword and two Uzis” – as somehow a reflection of his real manhood. … (maybe) “second” is accurate for those who have no life in the first place.“ (Rumbelow [10.])

The Morris worm or Internet worm of November 2, 1988 was one of the first computer worms distributed via the Internet. It was written by a student at Cornell University, Robert Tappan Morris, and launched on November 2, 1988 from MIT.
Professional hacker Parisa Tabriz is responsible for keeping the nearly billion users of Google Chrome safe by finding vulnerabilities in their system before malicious hackers do. Tabriz, a “white hat” hacker who calls herself Google’s “Security Princess”, is head of the company’s information security engineering team. The 31-year-old Polish-Iranian-American is also an anomaly in Silicon Valley according to a recent profile in The Telegraph: “Not only is she a woman – a gender hugely under-represented in the booming tech industry – but she is a boss heading up a mostly male team of 30 experts in the US and Europe.”
Tabriz came up with “Security Princess” while at a conference and the unusual title is printed on her business card. “I knew I’d have to hand out my card and I thought Information Security Engineer sounded so boring,” she says. “Guys in the industry all take it so seriously, so security princess felt suitably whimsical.” Her curiosity, mischievousness, and innovative thinking are all assets in her business: a high-profile company like Google is constantly in the crosshairs of so-called “black hat” hackers.
Tabriz came into internet security almost by accident; at the University of Illinois’ computer engineering program, her interest was first whetted by the story of early hacker John Draper, who became known as Captain Crunch in the 1960s after he learned how to make free long-distance calls using a toy whistle from a Cap’n Crunch cereal box. She realized that, to beat the hackers of today, she had to be prepared for similar — but more advanced — out-of-the-box thinking.
While women at still very under-represented in the tech industry — Google recently reported that only 30% of its staff is female — Tabriz has hope for the future: “[F]ifty years ago there were similar percentages of women in medicine and law, now thankfully that’s shifted.” And, while she hasn’t encountered overt sexism at Google, when she was offered the position, at least one classmate said, “you know you only got it cos you’re a girl.” To help address this imbalance, she mentors under-16 students at a yearly computer science conference that teaches kids how to “hack for good” — and she especially encourages girls to pursue internet security work. One 16-year-old who attended, Trinity Nordstrom, says, “Parisa is a good role model, because of her I’d like to be a hacker.”
Tabriz, who was named by Forbes as one of the “top 30 under 30 to watch” in 2012, also wants the public to realize that hacking can be used for positive ends. “[H]acking can be ugly,” she says. “The guy who published the private photos of those celebrities online made headlines everywhere. What he did was not only a violation of these women but it was criminal, and as a hacker I was very saddened by it. I feel like we, the hackers, need better PR to show we’re not all like that… [A]fter all I’m in the business of protecting people.”
