Excerpt from the book Coming Out Under Fire The History of Gay Men and Women in World War Two: Burt Miller, a gay Navy officer who served aboard an LST (landing ship, tank) in the Pacific, was astounded one night to find that some of the crewmen, who had been overseas for more than a year and had seen women only once in the Philippines, were pairing up in the dark while watching movies on the tank deck. Standing at the back of the rows of the cots where the men sat, he began to notice from their silhouettes against the screen that they were holding hands. After a month or so they had their arms around each other, then âafter another month youâd see them kissing.â What the men were doing was âobvious to one another,â Miller emphasized. âIt was not only the back roll.â But they reminded out of sight of the officers who sat in the privileged front roll seats.Â
Robert Gervais recalled that during his late watch one night on his destroyer, the lieutenant commander came by âto chat a little about the signals or stuff like that. I had him pegged as a strict disciplinarian. And so both of us looked down in number two turret there and two guys were having sex. You could just see it in the moonlight. So I looked down there, and he looked, and he looked at me and said, âGervais, would you go down there and tell those men to move underneath the turret out of sight of the bridge.â Not to get their names or stop whatâs going on or bring them up to the bridge! So I went down there and I stamped my feet as I went by and of course they shoved off. Nothing said, you know. I thought, 'You old son of a bitch! Youâre not as bad as they think you are.ââ On a similar night, Burt Miller went up to the conning tower of his LST to read, switched on the light, and âhere was one of my radar men and one of my signal men in a '69.ââ Miller âimmediately switched the light off againâ and never reported the men.Â
Maxwell Gordon recalled what happen on his carrier when two men were caught sleeping together. âEarly one morning in chow line I was standing with some friends and there was a commotion ahead, and we all looked over the rail, and there were two fellows down there. I knew one of them. And they were naked, except the older one had on black socks. And they were wrapped in each otherâs arms, front to back. Theyâd obviously been screwing all night long. People started throwing pieces of bread down on them till they woke up. They were very embarrassed - hundreds of people saw them. The other men were whistling and saying 'Oh, wake up! Itâs morning!â The one fellow who was a bos'nâs mate was kidded for weeks and months after about his socks. They said, 'Hey weâre all going to take a shower. Do you want to put your socks on and come along?â Because thatâs all he had on.â

Day Six of ocdynamicsmonth with Ida and Friedrich. AU
Friedrich held out the cigarette to her, a small spark of light between them, but Ida shook her head and didnât take it. It felt almost like rejecting an olive branch, like not accepting a wordless apology. An apology for what? There were many rifts between them, gaps which would not be bridged by a cigarette, the thin, white stick not strong enough to walk across the divide between them on. Instead, it became yet another small rejection, another hurt and she felt further away from him, shoulder against shoulder, than she had done an ocean away.
âI stopped. Itâs not good for the children,â she explained.
âThe children,â Friedrich hummed. He had his forearms braced against the balustrade of his small, bare balcony. âTheyâre cute. They look like him.â
âHeâs their father. I didnât clone myself.â And besides, Betty looks just like me. Same hair colour, same eyes.
It was dark outside, as dark as it could get with the lit street light right beneath the balcony and she could see a handful of stars in the black sky above them. Friedrich didnât reply and Ida regretted not accepting the cigarette from him; taking a drag would have calmed her, would fill the silence between them, heavy as the smoke curling out of Friedrichâs mouth.
âAnd mother didnât say anything about the house?â She asked after a moment. âAbout why she left it to me?â That had been the only thing in her motherâs will; that the house by the woods was to go to Ida; everything else would be shared equally between the siblings. Not that there was a lot to share or many siblings left to share with.
âShe said that she wanted to show you something there. She said it a couple of times, actually, those last few weeks. You should have been there,â he accused.
This time Ida was the one who didnât answer him, instead leaned against the rail so that they were facing each other; or rather looking past each other. Friedrich, down into the street and Ida through the glass of the balcony door into the dark flat behind it. What could she tell him? I live halfway across the planet. The children. Work. It all sounded like excuses, even to her, cheap and lacking.
âYou donât remember it either, do you? None of it.â Friedrich stubbed out the cigarette against a flower pot, the plant inside withered and dead.
Ida shook her head. âI canât remember anything. Not a single summer. I donât know what it looks like, what we did there⌠nothing.â
âYeah, me neither.â
âIsnât that weird? How is it possible that itâs all just⌠gone?â
âI donât know." Friedrich answered curtly, he clearly didnât want to talk about it anymore.
Ida pushed off the banister. âI should go check in on the girls.â
Friedrich only lit another cigarette and didnât acknowledge her slipping back into the flat. He still lived like a university student, a forever bachelor, despite being in his mid-thirties. The four of them -Ida, Robert, Lotte and Betty- had taken over his living room, the adults on the pull-out couch, Lotte on an old mattress and Betty in a crib Friedrich had organized from somewhere before the family had arrived. He might not have shown much interest in his nieces, but he had thought of that, at least.
Gotta be his height. Not that he's exceptionally short for his time because he isn't, 167 is an alright height, especially combined with boots that have a little heel to them, but he is also rather lean so he constantly feels small. When surrounded by significantly taller men he does feel uncomfortable, so of course he has to overcompensate with some bullshit like being loud or like, "y'know what they say about short guys â they have the biggest peckers" đ. He's so cringe. And he is also kinda petty about Germans being large and therefore easier to shoot lol.
Who hates Callum O'Connor:
who doesn't
Contrary to popular belief, he isn't really that unpopular. His fellow airmen like him fot the most part because he's funny in that specific ironic bitchy way that enlisted men like, he's a good drinking buddy and generous with his money too. So who hates him? WĹadka at first, that much is obvious.
Other than that? Definitely the most junior ground crew that takes care of keeping the planes clean because one time Cal turned up to the exercises hungover (well, that happened more than once) and proceeded to barf in the cockpit. Bertie, his navigator, also hates him a bit for this reason. Same guy who then got so sloshed he pissed in Cal's locker. Hypocrite.
And last but not least, Frankie hates him a little as well. Cal's crimes against the dog include: preventing the kids from feeding him when he hovers around the table like an eldritch god waiting for sacrifice, making him go outside in the rain to potty (which happens fairly often given the county they live in) instead of allowing him to piss the bathroom rug like the distinguished dog Frankie is, and also not forfeiting all his mortal possessions (blankets) to him immediately.
Bonus: WĹadka is attempting to learn how to crochet because the girls keep bugging her about some new toys. Cal finds the results of these attempts very funny. Frankie, not so much.

"You live like a male," Harriet complained and infused the word with more disgust than Magdalena had previously thought possible.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked, from where she was lounging on her bed, feet still in her boots, dangling off the side so that she didn't get dirt on her sheets. Instead, flakes of dried mud were tinkeling down onto the ground in front of her bed.
Harriet crowded in on her, looming over her with playful strictness, arms crossed and then uncrossed so that she could point at Magda's boots. "This, for one."
"I'll take 'em off. That 'feminine' enough for you?"
From her own bed, Samantha snorted loudly. "It's not just that. You have no pictures. Only boring clothes. No make up. Your bed-making barely meets regulation standards."
"I didn't know you've got a whole list. This feels like a dressing down."
Samantha and Harriet exchanged a look and a nod. "It is."
Magdalena toed off her boots, which hit the ground with a thud and a small explosion of mud on the ground. She straightened up and crossed her legs, watching the two other women fully now; alright you've got my attention.
"This is not like a prelude to a formal complaint or something? You're not trying to get rid of me? My masculine way of living?" There was a laugh in her voice that masked something she didn't want to think about; some age-old insecurity she had convinced herself she had left behind in the sky, escaped from it like she had escaped from the bounds of the earth.
"Nah," Harriet responded and grinned, revealing perfect pearls-on-a-string teeth.
"Not yet," Samantha said, darkly and then winked, a quick flash like that of a rugged-charming male lead in a Hollywood movie and who's masculine now?
"Alright? So what is the reason for this?"
"Bullying, mostly," Samantha replied.
"Aw, Shortcut! Don't say this about me. I'm mostly confused and bullying only comes second," Harriet explained and then she nudged Magdalena's leg to the side and dropped down onto her bed.
"Aren't you worried about your virtues if you sit on my masculine bed?" Magdalena drawled but enjoyed the warm press of their knees against each other, something which felt suspiciously like the ever illustrious 'female friendship'.
"Not currently. Just stop living like some monk who relinquished all her possessions to the church."
"Or the United States Army Air Force, in this case," Samantha corrected.
"Fine... I'll try my best to show some personality with my commodities."
Samantha wrinkled her nose like she did over the mess hall food every evening. "You sound like a damn commie."
--
Two weeks later, she found a small statue of Big Ben on her nightstand. She kept it there throughout the entire war.
no I am not "ontologically evil." this is a practiced skill that I actively fostered, it took work to get to be this evil, stop discrediting my efforts.

Excerpt from the book:Â My Queer War by James Lord
âIf only I knew.â I sighed. âI can hardly say. But I was assigned to a couple of prisoner of war camps.â
âYou donât say. So was I. Where did you do it?â
âMannheim, Heilbronn. You?â
âBad Kreuznach, Oberstein. What an assignment! All those boys. Theyâd lost everything, and they were ready for anything. And I was ready to give it to them. All those sex-starved kids. Course you had to clean'em up a bit first, feed'em a little, but then⌠Whew! Blond and blue eyes fighting form all over again. So I gave'em what they wanted, what they needed. What a wonderful war! So how did you make out?â
âAre you actually telling me you had sex with the prisoners?â
âNaturally. Didnât you?â
âOf course not.â
âWhy the hell not, you silly goose?â
âIt wouldnât have been right. Taking wrong advantage. They hated us anyway, and that would have only made it worse.â
âDonât be an ass. Youâd have been doing them a favor. Oh, yes, at first some of them were a bit Wagnerian, wanted to be great warriors all over again, but they got over that soon enough when their pants come down. They didnât really hate us. They were just hungry. You could say they were war-starved, and fucking with the enemy, well, it was like they were fighting again, and, you know, every orgasm is a kind of victory when youâre swimming in the other guyâs come and
thereâs nothing else. Itâs all just sex, is what itâs all about. If you know what I mean.â
âBut how did you do it? In the camp in front of everybody?â
âNaw, course not. You could take a prisoner in and out as easy as pie. The MPs had their own rackets anyway, didnât give a shit. You donât know what you missed. Some of those boys, the ones who could speak a little English, begged me to take them back to Cailfornia, and natch I said I would. It was war, and allâs far, and it was even love too. What can I tell you?â
âI wish I knew,â I said sincerely. âI wish I knew.â
