“ How … old was she? Or – like, how old would she be now, do you think? ”
❝ she was six, ❞ he says, voice quieter than usual. ❝ she would have been, i don’t know... twenties. ❞
squid bait.
“ Not if you’re planning on communicating with her instead of getting eaten alive. You never seen an alien movie? We come in peace, or something. Now, I don’t speak lake monster, but my wholehearted belief in her is certainly more of a welcoming vibe that whatever you’ve got going on. SERIOUSLY. If you keep up the whole fake thing, she’ll eat you in front of me and I’ll be traumatized for life. ”
❝ so, you think she would just pull up a chair and have tea with us? you don’t think that might be even slightly dumb? ❞ if she was real, communicating with her would just have been a death sentence. luckily, there was absolutely no chance that they would ever set eyes on a real monster. ❝ why would a monster care if i believed in it or not? isn’t it more convenient if i don’t? ❞

It might sound mean, but part of Teddy was hoping he’d reject the offer — made out of politeness, out of a failure to offer anything else. He didn’t want a REAL rejection, a no thanks, man that was sure to gain laughter from the other members of the band later. But an I have other plans, or you don’t need to do that. Something. But now there’s extra pressure, something he can’t alleviate with a nod and some silence padding the conversation. But he tries anyway, silent conformation opted for until they’re almost to the lot his car is in, and he says “ Um, up here. ” It isn’t until they turn and the car rolls to a stop, when hand on the door, he manages: “ D-do you like … lasagne? ”
it’s more than likely that teddy has been expecting rejection. after all, he and the rest of the band members don’t exactly find him... fitting. he’s soft, and quiet, and embodies none of the punk rock energy that is expected of them. but kit’s nothing if not opportunistic, and refusing free food would have been criminal of him. ❝ way ahead of you, man, ❞ he replies, putting the car in park and leaning over to shove his door open. before he fully exits the vehicle, he turns to teddy with a hint of a smile. or is it a smirk? ❝ oh, yeah. love it. ❞
violet armstrong.
“ it ‘ s like … whatever , you know ? ” she shrugs . her eyes off the road . “ i ‘ m like , a totally different person now , anyways . “ she is , in some ways . and in others , like , not so much … and perhaps a part of her does entertain the idea of totaling the corvette — perhaps a second too long , for she is still in thought when they pass the gate … so she does not slow down , she does not back up … naturally , her instinct is to u - turn , and for a very long second it feels like the car might flip over … but it doesn ‘ t . adrenaline rushes through her veins , and she laughs . “ holy shit “
he does little more than shrug a shoulder. a different person? he doesn’t know if he believes in changes like that, but... it’s not his business. not interesting enough to pry. he’s more focused on getting home at this point ( if only to snag some things from his father’s stash ) and only the pure recklessness of her swerve is enough to pull him off course. for a long moment, he thinks the car will flip. hopes it does. it’d be interesting, right? but in the end, the wheels plant themselves back on the cold, hard ground and he’s left wondering whether he’s supposed to be disappointed or not. ❝ holy shit, ❞ he agrees, sparing a glance at her. ❝ i like your style, violet. never change. ❞ the compliment makes him feel dirty, though. ❝ anyway, ❞ he staggers out the passenger seat; ❝ wait here. i’ll be back. ❞

gleb petrov.
“there’s a lot of crime.” it was the simpler answer. nevermind that most of the crime he saw was committed by someone who was now in prison. or at least it had been. “exactly. so why move when it ends up just being a hassle and then people are going to be shiw no matter where you go?” gleb figured that it wouldn’t change and he didn’t expect it to. “i don’t know. just hang. what are you supposed to do with friends?” there wasn’t much in town that he’d actually consider fun. “and no, i’ve heard enough horror stories about the lake to know to avoid it.”
❝ doesn’t surprise me... but i’d say there’s crime everywhere. even here, if you know where to look for it. ❞ not particularly violent crime, but crime nonetheless. mostly theft, ranging from shoplifting to... odder targets. like his workplace. ❝ your guess is as good as mine, but i could ask you the same question. you moved here, didn’t you? ❞ he shrugs a shoulder. ❝ i don’t know if you’re supposed to do anything. friendship can mean a lot of things. if hanging is good enough for you, i’d say that works just fine. ❞ a pause, a cocked brow. ❝ have you? do you believe the rumors, or just prefer to stay safe? ❞
chace vause.
❛ well, sure. but that’s—an activity, i’d say. if you were to simply be, then… alone, seems to be the obvious answer. no? because, and don’t get me wrong, but you hardly seem the extroverted kind. ❜
❝ you’ve got a point. i guess if you’re just there to escape something else, being alone would be a better option. ❞ a pause. ❝ really? what gives you that impression? ❞
julian apolskis.
❛ i don’t know… something, something—learning from your parents’ mistakes. ❜ he starts, uncertain of the point, and if he even had one. perhaps he did, only he must’ve lost it in a head spinning full speed. ❛ personally, i … i choose my own brand of fuck - ups. ❜
❝ i’m not here to learn anything from that idiot. good or bad. ❞ he snorts, a grimace tugging at the side of his mouth. contradictory? maybe, but he’s not thinking clearly. or maybe he’s just now starting? hard to tell. ❝ sounds fun. like what? ❞
mojo jojo.
‘‘ oh they will , i mean if i’m stuck in this shit - ass town for the rest of my life , i better make myself into a local legend . whether it’s for doing some spontaneous good deed or simply going on a killing spree - time shall tell . ’’ she mused , although her tone & physical nature seemed teasing , she was far from kidding . jojo was just a mystery wrapped inside a box that had a ominous message upon someone opening it . you never knew what you would get - punch in the face or friendly smile & free food . ‘‘ probably both - i mean show the talent with the vandalism , then maybe do some prints on the side for extra cash . yeah , i know a few people that would do well , but if someone told me that i forgot their ranch , i’d probably get fired for throwing it in their face . ’’ she shrugged , at least she was aware of her violent personality . ‘‘ beautiful . not that it’s a goal , although i know i’d rule at least one part of prison if i got behind bars . guess it wouldn’t help anyone when they find out i enjoy pain . ’’ she said , a slight skip in her step as she begins their adventure to the abandoned farmhouse .
randy doesn’t like very many people in town, for some reason or another... but he decides that she’s alright. worth talking to, even. ❝ i’m not sure i can picture a spontaneous good deed coming from you. what would it be? a bank robbery followed by a redistribution effort? ❞ far fetched, but not impossible... even if a lot of the money lurking around is starting to pile up in digitized banks. ❝ as for murder sprees... that is an easy way to make the papers. but you’d have to make sure it’s more interesting than just murder. after all, we’ve already got a reputation for deaths around here. ❞ but that’s out of his expertise. he isn’t wandering around looking for an excuse to make himself a legend. ❝ oh, but i’d love to see it when it happened. fired or not, they’d deserve it. ❞ following a step behind her, he shakes his head. ❝ only one section? i think with the right attitude, you could rule more than that. why not be ambitious with it? go for at least three. ❞
pippa espina.
“ What? When? Where? — How … how old was she? I mean, like … oh my god, I’m sorry. ” Did she ever come home? is the question even Pippa thinks is too insensitive to ask, at least on the first go.
❝ it was... here, actually. in town. when i was growing up. ❞ now that it’s out, he regrets saying anything. not because he can’t trust her, but because... well... talking about it just sucks.

pandora’s box.
‘‘ i —– alright , whatever . you get used to it after a while , i mean i barely notice it . ’’ yeah , because there wasn’t a time where she wasn’t at least somewhat intoxicated . it eased her anxieties , allowed her to actually live the life that she was going to be proud of on her deathbed instead of looking back on a life full of stress & lack of sleep or the worry of what her body looked like compared to others . ‘‘ probably , but we both know i’m far from a fighter , i’d probably apologize if i hit someone , even if they were getting ready to hit me first . my parents were hippies , the fuck you guys want from me ? ’’ it was a joke , although far from a lie . ‘‘ what else are they gonna do around here ? arrest cleo ? although it’s not like i’m hurting anyone , no one else was around . ’’
❝ i’m sure you do. honestly, i’d be more surprised if you did notice it... although, that does make it more difficult for you to hide, should you ever want to. ❞ but it’s nothing a good shower wouldn’t scrub away, and while pandora’s lifestyle leaves something to be desired, she’s hardly as grungy as some hippies like to be. ❝ true enough, but anyone can make themselves into a fighter, if they’re willing to work at it. even you. but i know you’re not much for conflict. ❞ disappointing, but that’s life, isn’t it? not everyone is into the same pastimes he is... unfortunately. ❝ i’d love to see them try, ❞ he says, a breath of laughter escaping him; ❝ but at the very least, i wish they’d just find something productive to do. nobody around here cares if someone lights up. ❞
ava rosilio.
“ Maybe Cleo just doesn’t show herself to lame-os who think she’s a crock of shit. I mean — haven’t you heard half the stuff that happened? That proves you wrong. How do you explain the upticks in alleged sightings before every attack — or that there was that guy that was witnessed being pulled under, no struggle by the police? Or that there are scratches on the hull of the boat all those kids were in? Or … ” She looks exasperated. “ I could seriously keep going, too. I mean, it’s been twenty years this year since the biggest drowning Lake Cleone ever saw. You don’t think that means something … just might happen? ”
❝ why would a lake monster care what i think about it? if anything, wouldn’t that make me a more likely target? ❞ it’s clear that she’s much more invested in this argument than he is. who really cares if there’s something hiding in the lake? as long as it doesn’t steal all the fish out from under him, he’ll be just fine. ❝ i don’t know, i think there’s probably a better explanation for all of that. so... no, i don’t think anything’s going to happen. but if something did, wouldn’t that mean we’d... you know, die? ❞
julian apolskis.
❛ you’re gonna make me work out in the snow, are you? dude, come on. you can’t rush perfection! give me until, like… june. at least. and i’ll have it up to regulations and shit. could even live out there if you wanted to. ❜ a cough. ❛ … right now? ❜
❝ since when has a little snow ever killed anybody? besides, out in your marshmallow coat you might even break a sweat. ❞ he smirks, swiping the blunt back from julian. ❝ what, you planning on entering a body building contest, first? ❞
b(ass) man.
Teddy can only muster a nod of confirmation, but he’s grateful. You’d think after years spent together, he’d be a little more comfortable around other members of the band. He’s not. He’s been playing with them for forever, and still: he feels like an outsider. He’s certainly one to the image of the band, quiet and clean cut and … decidedly UNPUNK. Still: it’s a good thing for Kit to do. Something anyone else might have expected of a friend, or sort-of-friend … but not Teddy. “ Thanks. ” The car turns, and Teddy shifts his gaze from outside the window back to Kit. “ If … uh, if you don’t want money, I’m cooking d-dinner. For me and m-my mom. I don’t know when she’ll be … ” He trails off, just in case — okay, because he DEFINITELY sounds lame describing a night in with his mother. “ You … can have some. ”
❝ no problem, ❞ he says, shrugging a shoulder. ❝ i wasn’t doing anything else today, anyway. ❞ it’s true — his schedule has been open since he woke up this morning. doomed to boredom, is how he would put it. being helpful may not often be on his top then list of things to do, but other than driving around aimlessly... what else is there? besides... ❝ free dinner, huh? you can count me in. it’ll be a cold day in hell when i refuse an offer like that. ❞ and all he has to do is help him tow his defunct car. it’s a good thing he was feeling helpful today... maybe he should give it a try more often.
louser.
he’s grown unfamiliar to kindness as of late, and while usually he’d take it poorly, anticipating a future mockery, he instead uses it as an instruction manual. ‘ yeah. fuck him. this is my house too. ’ lou scouts out a sizeable rock, hurling it at the window like he’s bowling two-handed — he hadn’t even bothered checking if they were even locked. the glass comes crashing down, the frame still spiked by the shards hanging on. ‘ i feel nauseous. i’m not gonna puke or anything but i think i need to sit down. ’
admittedly, kit isn’t expecting him to just up and chuck a rock at his own window, but... hey, there’s something to be said for problem solving, there. ❝ hey, you’ve gotten this far, you really gonna sit down now? wouldn’t it better to take a rest once you’re back inside? ❞ he cocks a brow, gaze shifting between lou and the now-shattered window.

“ that sounds like your problem, not mine.”
❝ i’m supposed to believe you’re being weird for no reason? ❞
louser.
‘ yeah. dad’s not working today.’ he assures, though a scowl is quick to climb onto his lips - taking his questions as though they’re interrogation and he’s one bad answer away from committing himself to the slammer. ‘ and we had an argument. i’m done for. i can’t fucking go to a homeless shelter. i just can’t. ’
❝ lou, ❞ he starts, voice chased by a sigh; ❝ you’ve had more arguments with your dad than i have, and that’s fucking saying something. why don’t you, instead of catastrophizing, take it like an accident and crawl in through your front window? ❞
