Rewatching Season 14′s Ouroboros I was instantly struck by what I was feeling toward the beginning of the episode. 

Cas and Dean are talking in the diner, with Castiel trying to get Dean talking about what he’s living with. Dean’s putting on a brave front about keeping AU!Michael locked away [closet themes], but facing his own mortality while Cas tries to take care of him.  In fact, Dean is telling Cas that he wants Cas to kill him put him in the Ma’lak box before it gets too bad. The conversation is interwoven and played over Jack coughing up blood in the bathroom, secretly slowly dying.  

It’s harsh. The whole thing suddenly smacked me in the face and I said to myself: Supernatural didn’t do an episode that reached for the feeling of living through the AIDS crisis,  There is no way.  Right?

Dean and Castiel go on a wild goose chase to Purgatory the same episode, looking for a Leviathan blossom for the spell to trap Chuck. but we find out in 17-Unity that there never was any way to trap him, the spell was something Chuck made up for the story. Continuity errors be damned, the only logical conclusion is that he wanted Dean and Castiel go to purgatory.

Chuck wanted Dean and Castiel in Purgatory, where Dean feels his emotions purely and can express himself. Dean prays to Castiel (which Jensen called Dean's confession) then goes to tell Castiel something. If Dean told Cas he loved him, Castiel would have gone to the empty, completely breaking Dean's spirit in a perfect same-episode-parallel to Eileen and Sam.

But he didn't. He didn't because Castiel stopped him.

I am now 100% convinced this visual nod with the orange lighting and the blue cross in 13x06 was an intentional Romeo and Juliet parallel and here’s why:

The first thing to know if you, like me, didn’t remember, is that the blue neon crosses in the 1996 Romeo and Juliet are in the church at Juliet’s wake after she has faked her death. The first gif in this set is after Romeo has returned to Verona, and, fully believing that Juliet is dead for real, he has run and fought his way into the church where she lies. He is approaching her body here.

Another thing to note about the 1996 Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet is there’s extremely heavyhanded angel imagery surrounding Juliet throughout like, the entire goddamn film. There’s angels everywhere in her room. She goes to the costume party where she first meets Romeo dressed as an angel, white fluffy strap on wings and all. It’s not subtle. It’s Baz Luhrmann, none of the imagery in this film is subtle. (for what it’s worth, Romeo attends that costume party dressed as a knight)

Okay so, angel, believed dead, reunion, yep that’s enough for one simple visual nod to this scene in romeo and juliet that most of the audience of supernatural won’t notice, just for the sake of queerbaiting the ones that do notice because it gives the scene a SIGNIFICANTLY more romantic connotation, yeah.

But. Y’all. Do you remember what Dean did in the last episode, 13x05? As part of his widower arc spiral, when he couldn’t save the kid the MOTW ghost got, he fucking injected himself with poison to (hopefully, probably temporarily) kill himself so he could talk to the trapped ghosts. Yeah he told sam to inject him with adrenaline after 5 minutes to bring him back but he did not have an absolute guarantee that would work. It was heavily implied if not stated outright that he wanted to die, while believing Cas to be dead, when he did that. Meanwhile we, the audience, already knew Jack had resurrected Cas.

They really brought Castiel back with a whole ass Romeo and Juliet parallel, with Dean as Romeo killing himself by poison and with the same dramatic irony, and then shot their reunion scene as a visual reference to the most iconic movie version of Romeo and Juliet.

But also of course in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo stays dead and then Juliet kills herself for real. Well, Billie brought Dean back saying he was needed for something big (killing God) — was this also foreshadowing of Cas’ confession in 15x18???

Excuse me but I’m going to have to murder whoever cut Jensen tenderly cupping Cas’s face out of the shot

and how they show us the Cast is v aware of Jensen's Dean kinning?

Misha's is a 'feelings' hand tapped next to his eye. I love that! I want to know if it's feeling coming from the eyes or shoshannah's favorite eyes. Jared's is a flat hand strumming against his face. Jensen's is a curved paw tapped on his chin. Shoshannah's, incidentally, is an 'S' hand rubbed against her chin, which is the part of the face used to denote femininity, and similar to the 'girl' sign.

The characters also have their own sign names.

Sam (One Handed Moose), Dean (Shaken 'D'), and Cas (One Wing):

Dean - shaken 'D' hand - Pointing up with the index finger, making a circle with your other fingers, then oscillating it.

Cas - single wing - 'Wings' sign would be mimicking flight with wings with both hands, then pointing to the hand, So I have to assume that means either pointing to a flat sideways hand with a thumb out, or 'flap flap' with one hand and then point at it. I love the idea of other characters hearing about this an calling Cas 'Wings' every once in awhile, tho I suppose Crowley already called him 'Feathers'

Sam's was "similar to "moose" except with one hand instead of two and without the branching out movement." Meaning 5 fingers spread wide with the thumb on the side of the forehead.

Now. Can we talk about how Jensen, not Dean, but Jensen's name sign is a one handed version of the sign for squirrel?

The sign for 'squirrel' is two 2-fingered-paws tapping on each other. The sign for 'Jensen' is one of those hands tapping on the chin.

Wait wait wait - so. So while 'Sam' was an augmented Moose. Jensen was and augmented squirrel?! NOT DEAN, JENSEN?!

How much do you think it would it bother Sam that Eileen gave him Crowley's nickname for him? 😂 Shoshannah said she doesn't think it made it into the show, but now I REALLY want to watch for moments Eileen said their names. If anyone finds it let us know!

What I want to know is, what is Eileen's name sign?

Misha: "I picked that because he's just so smart. and very healing. That's the sign for feel and then his eyes he's very intense with his eyes so"

For Jensen - "because he's so focused and so himself - his face is very symmetrical. and he always makes that look. He's got two little dimples right here [the dimples of discontent] I don't know if you guys can see those... they're the exact same! [impersonates Jensen's face] with his eyes squinting. but That's just his resting face! and I'm always like "Okay" okay so yeah - he has those two little dimples. that's Jensen. because of the dimples. [does inappropriate sign that's very similar] But that's a different sign so...

And then for Jared - I am he's just so friendly and vibrant, charming, and fun and so yeah, Jared."

So what happened on the IMFDb? On the IMFDb, Dean’s gun is accurately written out as a custom Colt M1911A1 with ivory sides--even in the screencaps of the show that appear under the weapon listing, you can see the plain ivory (though admittedly it doesn’t help when visibility in the Kripke era is next to nothing)–however the picture right below it clearly shows (and labels!) a Colt MKIV, which if you click the picture, was actually a gun used in a Robert DeNiro movie:

The gun image was uploaded in 2009, where since then, it has often been used as a placeholder image throughout the database—at least 48 times, 15 of which is for SPN:

My guess is that whoever made the pages for SPN didn’t have a clear image of the actual Colt at the time, and used the gun from Machete since it’s another Colt. And since then, that misattributed image has been used in articles about SPN, moodboards, etc. ANYWAY

All that said, even though Sam uses the gun more, one of the guns that Dean is shown using that does have pearl handles is the aforementioned Taurus, which he’s first shown using in 1.6, Skin (and is also, at least according to SPN Wiki, the first time the gun is used at all):

(side note that the image of the pearl-handled Taurus PT92AFS on the IMFDb is also used for multiple pages throughout the database, and though the gun image was also uploaded to the database in 2009 by the same contributor, I’m unsure of the source for that image).

Although it becomes Sam’s gun, Dean being the first one to use it, and to specifically use it in Skin–an episode where Dean kills a mirror image of himself, one who is so, so vulnerable and open about all the hurt he feels inside and being tired of his lot in life that he acts on it, where the lines between Dean and the monster become blurred–says something.
