The return
I first joined Tumblr in 2007 — April 23rd, to be specific — back when it was only a couple of months old. Twitter was still pretty new then too.
I mostly cross-posted tweets and blog posts as far as I can remember, maybe some Flickr images (remember Flickr?).
The internet was different back then.
Twitter was very different back then. For starters, it was mostly tech nerds; fail whales hadn’t fully taken hold, it was the early days. It was nice.
Now an egomaniacal anthropomorphic manifestation of the fail whale is running the joint as his own personal shitposting machine. Not so slowly ruining everything that was still good about it. He’s a sad, pathetic man who should be institutionalised, not running a massively critical global communications platform.
This brings me, quite literally, back to Tumblr. I’m a long-time WordPress user, and a general fan of all that @photomatt and the @automattic crew do, and glad that they’re steering this ship.
I’ve got my new user name @dean locked in, I haven’t totally worked out what content will look like (so follow me and we can find out together).
Might be stories, might be memes. Might be design, might be themes…
Here’s to the Tumblr renaissance 🥳
