I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this yet but I think Vox holding his pride flag behind his back might be a reference to the fact that he’s not comfortable with his sexuality. Like even in his drugged-out state he’s still trying to hide it (the flag and his sexuality) but the flag is so large that he can’t. And even if he could his whole outfit (himself) is bi themed.

I know I’m reading into things that probably aren’t there but I love Vox and his internalized homophobia. His internal suffering gives me life.

alastor lived in a time where people of color were heavily demonized. treated like the scum of the earth. and we see alastor dealing with this in rosie's flashback sequence. and after reeducating myself on the jim crow era a bit, i found myself thinking "it really is no wonder that, presumably, alastor wanted to hit back"

(mini side rant: it is truly an offense that my school like. didn't touch on jim crow after...what, 5th grade??? I honestly do not recall an instance after 5th grade where we learned anything about jim crow. we read bryan steven's novel Just Mercy in high school English, but the next time i had a civil rights-focused class was my America in the 1960s high school class, which i purposefully signed up for because i knew i knew jackshit about it. it was an elective. it wasn't required. i was the only person in my grade in that class.)

and like, yeah murder is bad. obviously. that should be assumed without saying. but I understand the motivation. he's living in a horrible time, where honestly the only places he's actually welcomed in are the illegal joints like speakeasies. everywhere else he's basically persona non grata. he's not seen as a person, a la the wine glass guy.

and so he starts seeing the people perpetuating this as deserving of his retribution, be it for himself or someone else. he murders them, he takes sadistic joy out of it. he's a bad person. he knows this. internally, he may even agree that he's not human. he knows what awaits a man like him in the afterlife, after all.

so when he dies and goes to Hell, that itself could have reaffirmed that belief.

it kinda reframed that line for me.
