being a member of the law enforcement in barton hollow was a much bigger challenge that logan had originally anticipated. supernatural creatures were supposed to be protected here — that was another of the reasons he’d chosen to settle in the small town , he thought val might be safer from his kind at least — but the truth was another one entirely.
as the father of a witch , logan didn’t feel like taking part in any of the murders / cover ups going on inside the sheriff’s station ( not unless it was about one of the vampires responsible for his family’s deaths ) . what the hell would valerie think of him if he did ? so he had politely declined the offer , despite the sheriff’s constant insistences. he’d even though about moving away , several times. if things kept escalating the way they did then it would no longer be safe for valerie and they would have to hit the road again , revenge be damned. if he lost his kid then what was the point of living anyway ?
dinner was ready and waiting on the table ( as most nights when it was his turn to cook dinner consisted of valerie’s favorite takeout place ) so logan made his way towards his daughter’s room to let he know. the door was ajar but he still knocked and waited to be invited in. while he stood leaning against the frame , logan thought of a way to either bring a smile to val’s face or earn a pillow to the face from her. ❝ hey kid , ❞ a sheepish smile formed on the detective’s features before he even got a chance to utter the question. ❝ what do you get when you cross a vampire with a snowman ? ❞ ( @valrisen )

“ah ah ah detective” cyrus said swatting at the man’s hand. He would admit he did get a little too close, curious to see what the man was so intent on reading but to no avail. “you don’t seem like a sangria kind of man.” he smirked, turning on his stool to look at the other. “pray tell what has your mind so far far away?” he asked.

once he’d realized the error a slight wave of embarrassment washed over the detective. keen eye logan , he mentally scolded his mistake. ❝ sorry for that. ❞ logan quickly moved his hand away and wrapped it around the correct drink this time — an unfortunately flat beer. his nose wrinkled up ever so slightly with distaste as the liquid reached his lips. ❝ actually , i think i’d rather have a sangria over this. even if it’s not my drink. ❞ the detective wasn’t one to share personal things with people he barely knew therefore he chose to stick with an elusive answer. ❝ family matters. ❞ his words were accompanied by a dismissive gesture. ❝ it will blow over , just like it always does. ❞
while she worked there, nightshade was not really her kind of night out, so when she had the chance to kick back with a drink - she had found herself frequenting bridgeport instead. the environment was calmer, less intense than the throngs of people flailing their bodies to the vibrations of whatever the dj was spinning. elena liked calm. even more so, she liked the opportunity to keep to herself - which the close pressed encounters of the club did not afford her. it is one of those nights, one of those chances to take a breath and she has welcomed it with open arms. opting for a whiskey rather than a beer, she’s nursing her third drink, trying to bury the worries that surface whenever she’s alone with her thoughts. languid fingers reach for her glass just as another reaches for it, her hand colliding with theirs. “uh-” honey irises flicker to the man beside her, head canting. she hasn’t really been paying attention to him, nor even registered his previous muttering, but she notices him now. “you always got wandering hands or should i feel special ??”

when his hand makes contact with another logan’s first instinct is to flinch back as if he’d touched a flame. having been lost so deep into his own thoughts , as well as the cascade of messages which still kept pouring into his phone , the hunter hadn’t even noticed that the chair next to his had been occupied. blue eyes fell onto the girl , a small , slightly awkward smile on the detective’s features. ❝ normally i’m more careful than this. ❞ he finally spoke , hand reaching out for the correct drink this time. ❝ but this time i had a lot on my plate. ❞ a quick shrug. ❝ can i get your next drink ? ❞ the question was followed by a polite smile. ❝ as a way to say i’m sorry. ❞ the detective quickly added so she wouldn’t get the wrong impression.
ciri had her tablet out, moving fingers quickly over its screen. with technology, it was a lot easier to lead this double life — she could hide her power, coat herself tightly with glamour, without facing many uncomfortable things. yes, she did use her magic still, but playing being human now was… fine. not ideal, but fine.
but back to the point. between one website and another, she absently lifted her hand to get the bottle… that wasn’t here. ciri looked up, blocking the screen too, and putting the tablet away in her bag. she lifted a brow and tilted her head. “ — if you want to drink on my tab, buy me dinner first, “ she threw in light tone, already in her role for this life. “ or pay my rent, that works too. “

the sound of another voice brought logan back into the present moment and finally made him switch off the incessant buzzing of that damned device ( if his line of work hadn’t required owning a phone he would have happily thrown it off a cliff ). at first he had trouble wrapping his head around the young woman’s words — drinking on her tab ? when had that happened ? but a quick look at drink in his hand was enough to lift the fog off his thoughts. ❝ oh , shit ❞ the words spilled off his lips once he’d realized the mistake. ❝ i’m sorry for that ❞ the detective set the bottle back down onto the counter. ❝ well , i’m not sure about rent , ❞ a small smile formed on his features as he continued ❝ but your next round is on me. it’s the least i can do. ❞
it was almost closing time at the local bar but the detective still hadn’t finished his first bottle of beer which was now warm and completely flat after having spent so much time neglected on the counter. for the past hour his eyes had been glued to the screen of his phone --- too much news is never good news. a deep frown had been present on logan’s features the entire time as he read through the threads of text messages trying, and failing, to make sense of them. it was always cause for a headache when he got updates from hunters outside of barton. especially those who thought they had caught sight of one or another of his late family members running around somewhere. ❝ oh , son of a bitch ... ❞ the hunter muttered as he reached for his bottle. ❝ dead means dead , fucking learn that already. ❞ gaze still focused on the device buzzing in his hand, the detective didn’t realize he was in fact reaching for someone else’s drink instead of his own. @bartonstart

introducing , logan james devlin. 36. hunter. homicide detective.
backstory.
the middle child of three sons.
the devlin family have been hunters dating back many generations.
logan’s ancestors were infamous for the cruelty with which they treated supernatural creatures of any kind, regardless of whether or not they were actually guilty of the crimes they had been accused of.
needless to say, they were not very well seen by the supernatural community and even certain families of hunters avoided being associated with the devlins. at one point they were nicknamed ‘ the devils ‘ for their undiscriminating acts of cruelty.
the devlins are originally from chicago but they didn’t spend a great amount of time there. they used the city as their base and it mostly served for training new hunters before they got deployed wherever they were needed.
the family moved around wherever the job took them ( aka wherever they had the most supernaturals to kill ) whether it was in the usa or outside of it. if someone needed their services, they answered the call.
for quite some time this used to be logan’s life. he didn’t completely hate it but he didn’t enjoy it either. it was something that was imposed on him without any actual consent and something he had to do if he wanted to stay in his family’s good graces.
when he was around 17 logan met someone and fell in love. there was just one little problem: she was a witch. if his family found out about their relationship they would most likely have her killed. so the two decided to keep it a secret, settling for seeing each other whenever it was possible.
things got a little more complicated when she got pregnant. she had to tell her family about the father and needless to say they were very unhappy about their daughter seeing a hunter. so they kicked her out.
logan made arrangements for her and the baby to live in chicago and he promised to come visit as often as possible.
once he was old enough to be allowed to think for himself, logan decided to settle in chicago as well to be closer to his girls. he ( by some miracle ) managed to fool his family regarding his girlfriend and daughter’s species. he also kept visits between them and his family as few as possible.
he also started to select his hunting jobs whenever possible, only taking on actually dangerous creatures who were intentionally harming humans.
for a while things were quiet, happy even. it was almost too good to be true.
logan also became a cop for chicago pd.
everything changed about three years later.
when he came home after a solo job, logan was met with a horrible sight: his current home had been burned down with his family still inside. authorities said that the fire was certainly not an accident --- it was murder.
they were killed by supernaturals, logan assumed, either witches or vampires. he didn’t share his suspicions with anyone.
he thinks someone might have survived but so far he’s come up empty in his search and is beginning to lose hope.
his girlfriend was reported missing two nights later while logan was busy planning funerals. since there was a lot of blood on the scene the local police assumed she was dead as well and the body had been moved. they only waited on classifying it as a homicide for logan’s sake. her body was never found.
by some miracle ( no doubt performed by his girlfriend ) their daughter survived and was placed into her father’s care.
he’s instructed his daughter to only use magic around him, nobody else. if other hunters find out what she is, she’ll be in trouble.
he kept searching for the people responsible on his own, only taking help from other hunter families when he absolutely had to.
he still has some extended family out there but they’re pretty horrible people so he makes as little contact as possible.
he’s sure that everything that happened is his fault, that he messed up some job without realizing.
after aimlessly travelling around for some time, chasing rumors, he got a tip that the people he was looking for might have relocated to the newly developed town of barton hollow.
so he took his daughter and moved home from chicago to barton hollow about a year after the town was established.
logan took a job with the local police department as detective and settled in quite nicely.
besides his day job as a homicide detective he still takes up hunting jobs whenever the right ones come across; those he thinks might bring him closer to whoever it was that killed his loved ones.
while nobody has a move on either him or his daughter yet, logan can’t afford to sit on his ass and wait.
he doesn’t kill indiscriminatingly like his ancestors have done before --- he keeps a very low profile as a hunter --- but whenever it’s needed he does make sure to let supernaturals know that he’s willing to blow their heads off their shoulders.
character facts.
close friends are allowed to call him LJ. to everyone else its logan or detective devlin.
honestly, i think that most days he feels more at home at the sheriff station than he does in his own house.
he doesn’t openly talk about being a hunter, not even with other hunters.
favorite food is coffee. in the morning he’s always got a large cup in his hand that he drinks before he even gets from the front door to the car.
out of all the supernatural species he prefers witches. faeries and vampires are his least favorite.
when he’s not at home or at the sheriff station, and his daughter doesn’t need his help with anything, he’s either in a bar drinking by himself or at the animal shelter where he volunteers sometimes. as you can see he has a very active social life...
his daughter is pretty much his universe and he does whatever he can to keep her safe, even if she doesn’t always like it.
dog dad and proud.
personality.
logan used to be a major frat boy before his family was killed, very into parties and wasting nights in shady places. he was kind of the black sheep while his older brother was the golden boy. but when he found himself all alone with a child to raise he was forced to grow up.
now he’s more mature and traded parties for parent-teacher meetings and cheap alcohol for the more expensive kind, mixed with black coffee.
there are days when he can come off as aloof and maybe even a jerk, especially if he’s had a rough start in the morning. but generally, he’s very polite and tries to be nice towards everyone he meets, human or otherwise.
he is very wary of supernaturals, however, especially if they express any interest in his daughter.
it takes him a very long time to open up to anyone, especially about personal things. he can carry a conversation about anything else but if it gets too deep he’ll just nope right out of it and find some excuse to walk away.
tell him he can’t do something and (if it doesn’t get him killed) he’ll do it twice and take pictures of it. he’s very stubborn like that.
