The Ballista, a siege engine so old that dates back to even biblical times, as stated in II Chronicles, used by old King Uzziah, is a force to be reckoned with. Made famous by the likes of Alexander The Great, and his father Phillip II, this ancient artillery piece wreaked havoc wherever it was deployed. Able to be configured for both spherical stone balls as well as bolts, the weapon rarely wanted for ammunition, and the adaptations to its design kept it relevant until the age of gunpowder. From the smaller, mobile, scorpion models and horse drawn carroballista that helped the Roman Empire claim its territories to the mythical polybolos which was one of the first “repeating” weapons of antiquity, the ballista is something that should be adored by all military historians, as it was by the generals of its day.
