I wish I didn't have to do this, but I've exhausted all other options. I've opened up a GoFundMe for my performance in Vancouver. Even with the job I'm working now, rent is way more than I can afford for six weeks. It's come to the point where if I don't find a solution, I'm gonna be working without a roof over my head.

I'm desperate, and I'm frustrated. I've worked incredibly hard for this opportunity and it feels like once again, because of my and my family's income, I'm stuck. I don't know what to do anymore.

If you can, please share this. It'd mean the world to me to get some help, you all know how much this job means to me, Cats aside. I've dreamed of this since I knew how to dream. DBH fandom...ASSEMBLE!

I’ve seen complaints about Kara’s arc on Tumblr a few times. I didn’t want to hijack those threads with a counter argument because I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions. People are allowed to like or dislike something for their own personal reasons. But it has stuck in my mind long enough that I want to offer some alternate thoughts.

Firstly, there is a very strong theme of parenthood in DBH. (Arguably the BEST theme in this game.) It is in all three main character arcs. Kara’s story is the core of this theme. She wasn’t put in there arbitrarily because woman must equal mom because all woman are only baby-making machines. There is a reason her story is the way it is.

Her goal isn’t to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen making sandwiches. She sees a child that has experienced nothing but misery and abuse and all she wants is to keep Alice safe and give her a better life. And she is willing to give her own life to make this happen. How is this not noble? How is not an example of goodness and selflessness we should all strive for? Why are female characters no longer allowed to care for or protect the most vulnerable of us?

Just because she isn’t leading the revolution or hunting deviants doesn’t mean her story isn’t important. She isn’t affecting the world on a massive scale, but she is still changing it in little ways. She makes an impact on nearly everyone she meets, this includes both Connor and Markus. Even Todd in some scenarios.

Girlfriend also has ample opportunity to be a badass throughout the game. She can survive both Todd and Zlatko’s house, running across a fucking freeway with a child, FBI raids, android death camps. She will straight up murder people in order to keep Alice safe.

People also forget that you can choose to reject parenthood. Being accused of wanting to be a mother to Alice by either Luther or Lucy, you can make a choice not to accept Alice and not reach that family status. You can also ditch Alice and leave her to her own fate in a few places.

I am writing this as a woman who does not like children and does not plan to have any of my own. If I see a child in trouble, of course I’m going to try to help them. Attempting to play parent to a child in need until they get help would not be problematic when I’m also a woman. I will defend any woman’s decision to parent, be they real or fictional. Because I support women making their own decisions about their lives. If there is anything about this that is problematic, it’s being mad about a fictional female character taking charge of her life and making her own decisions. Women are allowed to choose motherhood. We all have moms. Why is being a mom suddenly a bad thing?

These days, the fad is to be offended over everything and call it all problematic. It’s gotten to the point where people just regurgitate the same thing over and over without thinking about what they are saying. In this current climate of demanding diversity and representation, it is very clear DBH made an honest effort to do what they could. There are male and female POCs in both main and supporting cast, different body types, both children and old people, characters with disabilities and alternate sexual orientations.

Quantic Dream did what they could to check a lot of boxes and they did it in a way that didn’t feel like they were pandering to those who are hypersensitive to this subject. I think this only benefited the story. Yet people still found the game to be ‘problematic’. Because no matter how many boxes you try to check, someone’s going to come up with more imaginary, arbitrary boxes so they can complain and be offended.

It is impossible for one story to check every single box these people make up. You can make an attempt to be inclusive and diverse, and I think you should, but then you eventually get to a point where you have to stop trying to check more boxes and start telling your story.
