Have you ever noticed that a river is never the same from one moment to the next?
The water flowing past you right now will never pass that way again. Thatâs the idea behind this quote: Time is like a river. You cannot touch the same water twice because the flow that has passed will never pass again.
Most of us understand that intellectually, but we often live as though weâll always have more time. More time to heal. More time to forgive. More time to pursue our dreams. More time to enjoy our families. More time to become the person we were created to be.
But rivers teach us something important.
Water that continues to flow remains fresh, oxygenated, and life-giving. Water that is trapped and held onto eventually becomes stagnant. It grows murky. It loses vitality.
The same thing can happen in our lives.
Many people become stuck because theyâre trying to hold on to the pastâpast hurts, past failures, past regrets, past fears. Others become trapped in anxiety about the future. In both cases, the flow of life is interrupted.
Joy is found in learning to live in the present moment while moving forward with purpose.
Thatâs one of the central ideas behind my book, Rewired for Joy. Drawing from both biblical wisdom and brain science, the book explores how our brains can become trapped in unhealthy patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaviorâand how those patterns can be changed.
Neuroscience calls it neuroplasticity. Scripture calls it the renewing of the mind.
The encouraging news is that your brain is not fixed. Your future is not fixed. New pathways can be formed. New habits can be developed. New joy can emerge.
So today, donât cling to water that has already flowed downstream. Learn from the past. Trust God with the future. And embrace the moment youâve been given.
Because like the river, this moment will never pass your way again.
Enjoy it. Live it. And keep moving forward.

Jeremiah 2:13
âThey have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselvesâŚâ
A powerful contrast between living, flowing water and stagnant stored water.
