So far, Iâve read about 1500 pages of French which translates to about 8 books. All of them are classics and of varying difficulty. These are:
1. Le Horla by Guy de Maupassant (short story collection) 2. Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery 3. Le Crime de lâOrient-Express by Agatha Christie 4. Le Petit Nicolas by Sempe and Goscinny 5. La Marquise by George Sand 6. Hier et Demain by Jules Verne 7. Les Mille et Un FantĂ´mes by Alexandre Dumas 8. La femme au collier de velours by Alexandre DumasÂ
I think of all of them the easiest to read was Le Crime de lâOrient-Express followed by Hier et Demain. Some were difficult but I kept reading due to interest. I tried out Le Petit Nicolas because reading childrenâs books is a common advice in the language learning community. However, I think itâs not for me. Itâs better for me to pick something which may be above my level (but not too above my level) but is interesting enough to keep me going. Reading using an e-reader works great because it makes lookups less tiresome and annoying.Â
For the most part, I do extensive reading but I would occasionally look up or translate words and sentences if I donât understand something. I think this approach really works best once you know about 2000 words although it helps a lot that French shares a lot of vocab with English.Â
I think Iâve posted about this on my main, but deastheticizing my studying has been helpful for my studying. I still want to post on this blog but the past few years, I really struggled with stuff, took breaks from law school, and came back. But thatâs okay. As weâre frequently reminded, law school is not a race but a marathon.
Anyway, I mentioned that Iâm learning French. Iâm taking a lighter load for my law classes while I wait for on-site classes which gives me quite a bit of time for my language learning. Something I found really helpful is jumping into native content early, which in my case is reading books, instead of waiting until I understand everything. I think that in my previous language learning endeavors, waiting has really held me back and caused me to get demotivated and stop studying only to pick it up again later. Not taking copious amounts of notes I wonât revisit has helped me manage my time better and study better.Â
I highly recommend Lingvist since Iâm not a huge fan of Anki. I like how it teaches vocabulary using cloze sentences so you have to type out the correct word. I also find the stats about what percentage of any text in your TL you can read motivating and somewhat accurate.Â

amusement et plaisir:
Studying German again and honestly, studying other languages made me appreciate my native language more. I mostly learn languages to read literature and while Iâm learning to appreciate contemporary filipino lit on wattpad for its accessibility, I wish more works are written entirely in Tagalog. Iâve been realizing how beautiful my native tongue sounds and how romantic and poetic it could be. I think Iâll make it a goal to write a book entirely in Tagalog someday.

today my goal is to relax, I will start my studying for finals tomorrow but I've just finished a bunch of assignments (hence why I didn't post yesterday) so I'm giving myself a rest day~
day eleven: What element do you feel most connected to and why? (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) I feel most connected to water, the feeling of fluidity is so interesting to me and I love being in the ocean or a pool. I just feel calm and weightless
day twelve: Do you ever wish that you could go back in time and change something about your life? If you did, what would be different now? I wish I had told someone earlier with urgency that I wasn't okay mentally (when I was like 14). I'm not sure how much it would've done because I don't think my parents would've believed me haha.

4.11.21 | Yesterday was bad and awful, I got nothing done and was sad and angry all day. Today has been nice and productive, Iâm getting through my to-do list with minimal procrastination, and might even have time to relax once Iâm done.
The only conclusion I will draw from this is that sometimes things are shitty and sometimes they arenât and I have literally no control over whether itâs one or the other.
02.06.21 | Woke up at 5:30am and couldnât fall back asleep. Ended up grabbing coffee then spending the rest of the morning grinding thru lecture. Then promptly fell asleep. Then woke back up. My mind and body are no longer one

Part of my morning routine is now this: almost as soon as I wake up I pull on layers of warm clothes, and go for a walk first thing in the morning. I make sure to walk around for at least half an hour. During that time, every morning Iâve been listening to my audiobook version of âThe Odysseyâ. And yep, thatâs my genius visual representation of an audiobook.
