The first time Ilia saw her, she was sitting on the edge of a bench skate park watching her friends. cool shoes tapping her foot lightly against the concrete to a song playing through her earbuds. Cool hair, ripped jeans, band tee, and a smile that was the prettiest thing heâd ever seen. She had a vibe about her.
She wasnât what people expected him to be with.
And that was exactly why he couldnât look away.
Their relationship didnât look like the polished, picture perfect kind people imagined for a world champion. It was messy in the best way..late night fast food runs, scraped knees from her falling while he was teaching her to skate and skateboard, loud music, and laughter that echoed through empty parking lots.
As he taught her how to skateboardâŚit was a time.
âBend your knees more,â he called, arms crossed, trying not to laugh as she wobbled.
âyou iterally land quads, this is easy for you to say,â she shot back, clearly offended.
âAnd with that info youâd think to trust my coachingâ he grinned.
She fell two seconds later.
She laughed so hard she had to stay down, and he staring down at her with a crooked smile, completely gone for her.
Concerts became their thing.
Theyâd stand shoulder to shoulder in crowded venues, her eyeliner smudged, his hoodie pulled low, both of them screaming lyrics into the air like nothing else existed. Sometimes sheâd grab his hand and drag him closer to the stage, weaving through people like she belonged there.
Afterward, her voice always came out raspy.
âWorth it,â sheâd say every time.
And heâd nod, brushing hair out of her face. âDefinitely.â
Most days, she lived in ripped jeans, oversized band tees, and flannels tied around her waist. Or sweaters and sweats. Her style was effortless, grunge, a little chaotic, completely her.
Which is why the night she showed up to the door in a dress nearly made his brain short circuit.
It wasnât over the top, justâŚdifferent. Soft. Fitted. Her hair actually styled instead of thrown up, her makeup a little more precise than usual.
ââŚHi,â she said, suddenly unsure, tugging at the hem. âToo much?â
He shook his head quickly. âNo no, not at all. You justâ He paused, searching for the right word. âYou lookâŚreally pretty.â
Her cheeks warmed. âPretty?â
He smiled softly. âYeah. Really pretty.â
She rolled her eyes a little, but she couldnât stop the smile that followed.
The date was simple. dinner, a walk, talking about everything and nothing. But he kept glancing at her across the table like he was trying to memorize the moment.
âWhat?â she asked at one point, narrowing her eyes playfully.
âNothing,â he said, shaking his head. âJustâŚyou.â
She kicked his foot under the table.
Later, when he dropped her off at home, the night had settled into something warm. She lingered by the car door, not quite ready to go in.
He leaned against the hood, hands in his pockets, watching her.
âYou okay?â she asked.
âYeah,â he said. âJust thinking.â
âDangerous,â she teased.
He huffed a small laugh, then stepped a little closer to her.
âYou looked beautiful tonight,â he said.
She smiled, a little shy. âThanks.â
He hesitated for half a second before adding, âButâŚI prefer your regular style.â
She raised an eyebrow. âOh yeah?â
He nodded, a small grin tugging at his lips. âYeah. I love you like you are.â
There was a beat of silence.
Then she laughed warm, easy, completely herself.
âI love you more, just wanted to try somethingâŚdifferent.â
He kissed her cheek and then smiled
âDifferent is goodâŚbut i like my chill girlâ
She smiled putting her hair in a bun
