modernpriestess:
Kairi screamed.
It was a happy, joyous squeal as she leaped forward and dropped her wooden bokken so she could practically dive into the waves (and not worry about damaging it with salt water). She fell to her hands and knees at the break in the shore, her bright blue eyes sparkling in sheer wonder. “A mermaid! I can’t believe I’m seeing a real live mermaid!” The young maiden clapped her hands over her cheeks, looking up and down the shimmering green tail with awe, not caring for an instant that her shoes and socks and bare knees were now soaked. “It’s so beautiful!”
The mermaid couldn’t help some laughter.
She didn’t realize a human could be as enthralled about her as she was about them. Truth be told, she felt the same way. She was talking to a real, live human, and that was about the most exciting thing that could have ever happened to her. Yet this human seemed so excited to be talking to a mermaid. Were they really so uncommon to humans? She knew the rule, that their kinds were not meant to coexist. But she never imagined someone would be in such awe over something that, to her, was so normal.
“You think so? Well, thank you!”
Compliments were always a nice thing. Ariel was grinning, quite happy to be around someone as energetic as she was. What she thought was beautiful, were those legs. What a beautiful pair of legs, why, with a pair like those, a woman could do all the human dances. It didn’t matter that she had said she wasn’t much of a dancer. Anyone could dance! Anyone who said they couldn’t, was just too shy to let the music course through them.
“I wanted to watch the sunset, so here I am! It looks so much better from here than it does in the ocean.” The lighting was beautiful, but you couldn’t see the clouds change color from the ocean. You couldn’t see the bright orange tones of the sky. That was what she really wanted to see. The surface dwellers were so lucky, they got to see the sunset every single day! Ariel had to make a trip to the beach to see the sunset.
“What’s a human doing here? Did you come to see the sunset too?”
