Ribbon’s Ko-fi Rewards

Mercy had researched and studied every last detail of giving birth, read about countless mothers’ experiences and observed a few herself. All of it couldn’t prepare her for the fear, anxiety, love, and joy she would be overwhelmed with.

McCree was at her side through every moment. He was almost more terrified than her. He held her hand as the contractions grew stronger. He told her he loved her about a dozen times as she labored.

Then, he was born. Her baby. Their son.

Exhausted but smiling, Mercy lays on her side. The large bed lets McCree sit beside her. Being a respected doctor does allow a few perks in the hospital.

She’s never seen anything more beautiful. In McCree’s arms, a tightly swaddle newborn sleeps. The soft blue cap on the baby’s head keeps him warm and protected. Almost lost in awe, McCree looks down at their child. He smiles at his new little world. 

“He looks like you,” Mercy murmurs.

McCree lifts his head. The shine in his eyes betrays the tears on his cheeks. A few drops even land on his beard. Mercy’s never seen him like this before.

“Oh, Jesse,” Mercy reaches over and touches his arm. Her thumb reflectively brushes against her baby’s cheek.

Breathing out, McCree shakes his head.

“He’s strong and healthy,” McCree whispers. He gazes returns to the baby in his arms as if he’s the sun, a force of warmth and energy that keeps him alive. He’s the new light that chases away the darkness in the world.

Mercy knows. She smiles at her love, becoming misty-eyed herself. The thickness in her throat almost won’t let the words out of her mouth.

“He is. He’s our baby.”

A tear drops down her face but no one would say she’s weeping out of sorrow. The two most important things in her life are before her. McCree is already an adoring father. Their little boy will grow up happy and safe. For once, Mercy doesn’t worry about what needs to be done or what comes after.

She’s together with her family.

“You did amazing, darlin’,” McCree gushes with a laugh that only echoes with pure joy. “Charlie couldn’t have a better momma.”

He reaches over and gently wipes a tear from her cheek.

“If he’s lucky, he’ll take after your beauty.”

Mercy chuckles, almost crying again. Instead, she lays her hand on their little baby. The soft rise and fall of his small chest is a melody. His eyes stay closed, tired after the ordeal it took to get him here. It’s alright. She wants him to sleep and gather his strength. In McCree’s arms, she’s not so afraid for him and their future as a family.

“I think he’s going to have your hair,” Mercy murmurs. The littlest strands she saw on his head are brown. She’s not winning in that compartment.

McCree shakes his head but studies the newborn a little closer.

“It’s not too late to name him Jesse Jr,” Mercy suggests with mirth.

Jesse McCree has never been so glad to see the inside of this shitty apartment. The faded and scuffed-up wallpaper (who even has wallpaper anymore?), the stained carpets, the threadbare couch and chair… every one of them a welcome sight after the day he’s had.

Nothing about the place is glamorous, but it’s cheap and out of the way. It feels as much like home as any other place he’s rented out or squatted in as a safehouse, though he’s pretty sure he owes that to the other temporary occupant of the place. Sombra’s left evidence of her presence everywhere, from a coat draped over the back of the couch to bits and pieces of machinery scattered on the floor in the corner of the living room. McCree’s almost punched a hole right through the bottom of his foot stepping on an errant screw. More times than he could count, really. It’s strange, after so long on his own, but he can’t deny that he kind of likes it.

Strange and unfamiliar as it is, he wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s nice to come home to a place that feels lived-in for once. And if there’s one thing he needs right now, it’s the feeling of being home. 

He doffs his chestplate and leaves it on the floor where it falls, kicks off his boots, and tugs off his pants. There’s nobody here to scold him about leaving his junk everywhere (like the hypocrite she is), so why bother when he’s this beat? Sombra isn’t due back from her mission for another few days, so he’s got plenty of time to clean up before she gets here.

McCree makes his way to the fridge. He unbuttons his shirt as he walks; it falls open and exposes his chest to the cool blast of air from the fridge as he retrieves a beer. He finds himself longing for a whiskey and sighs. It’s still too early in the evening for that; besides, he and Sombra had finished off the last bottle before she left. 

“Should probably cut back anyway,” he tells himself after a quick glance down at his stomach. He’s far from having a proper gut, but age and poor eating habits are definitely starting to leave their mark.

He nudges the fridge closed with his foot, takes a swig of his beer, and heads right for the living room to crash on the couch. He flops down onto it, right in the middle, and shuts his eyes, finally letting the day’s exhaustion wash over him. 

“Hey, cowboy.”

After my Hanmetra post, I thought I would talk about another ship I was thinking of; so what about McCree and Pharah? They were both young when they joined Overwatch (I looked up that photo from Ana’s origins story again), they are both like “Justice is love, Justice is life” or what. xD So yeah, why not? I can imagine making more pictures of these two;
