for a moment alecto considered allowing marlene to walk through the door, contemplating the mess peeves could make of them. with a sigh she decided against it, reaching out to place a soft hand over their wrist, “i wouldn’t if i were you,” alecto warned, “peeves listened in on muggle studies, yet another reason why it is an appalling idea, and learned about flour and water bombs, he’s currently throwing water and flour on anyone entering the corridor,” the blonde hummed, her voice not quite as bothered by the revelation as she should have sounded.

“explain what, evans?” alecto questioned with a sigh, throwing her arms out to the side, “he is not going to pull me in and try to eat me, if people just took the time not to be so judgmental of a creature simply due to its size then maybe they would learn something instead,” she huffed, stepping away from the edge of the water to approach lily, kicking a rock on her way, letting the stone skip ahead of her a few times before abandoning it in favour of turning her attention to the other girl. 

“maybe you shouldn’t whine out loud,” alecto bit back, “grow up, no one is going to baby you once you’re no longer safe within these walls,” it wasn’t as much tough love as it was words spat full of venom. but dorcas was touching more nerves than alecto had anticipated, more than she had prepared herself for and the blonde exhaled sharply through her nose. “i suggest you keep your slanderous words to yourself,” alecto snarled, “and do not make assumptions about my life, we are making sacrifices to protect the world that your sort is trying to destroy, and believe me azkaban sounds like a fun holiday in comparison to some of what is expected of me and my brother because of you.”

alecto looked up at the shuffling steps but theo did not, no the cat remained content in her lap and for that reason only alecto stayed seated on the floor. letting her eyes roll in an exasperated gesture the blonde scoffed, “well now you know, bones,” she muttered, tilting her head back to look up at him, “if you don’t want something you can leave,” the self pity slowly vanishing from her voice and alecto sucked at her teeth before speaking again, “of course that is if you’re not just hiding from your friends, if i had your friends i would probably hide too, so feel free to stay and open up, theo won’t tell on you,” she looked down at the cat scratching her lightly, “isn’t that right, my love?” she cooed softly, smiling warmly at the animal.

“then stop whining before i get a headache, meadowes,” alecto calmly replied, dorcas’s harsh words in a way admirable, sure alecto would never tell her, but no matter what she thought of dorcas she could at least admire the way the girl stood up for herself. “when people like me learn? what exactly does that mean, dorcas? because that sounds a little bit like a threat, and i don’t think you want to do that,” alecto sneered.

alecto leaned back against the stone wall, theo curled up in her lap as she read the letter from her parents again. letting her fingers stroke through the cat’s fur alecto soothed her own emotions, scrunching the parchment up before throwing it across the empty space of the astronomy tower. “i hate them,” she confessed quietly, words whispered to the confidant purring in her lap, “how is it i’m the one being a brat when they are trying to ruin my life?” the blonde questioned, directing her words to the cat unable to provide her with the answers she was after.

“he’s an imbecile,” alecto proclaimed as she caught up with the younger lestrange brother, throwing him a half-glare, “slow down, i’m having to run,” she demanded through gritted teeth, pulling on his sleeve as alecto promptly stopped, making her point with an arched brow and a glare growing darker. it wasn’t necessarily rabastan’s speed that had affected her mood, it was the class, the teacher’s droning on about the dangers of dragons. alecto knew the dangers of dragons, but she knew that the tactics to defending yourself through attacks were not the way to do it, unless as rabastan had stated you wanted to die of course. “the only thing he was right about is that there are ways to defend yourself, but attacking a dragon is hardly the way to do it,” alecto spat, “i can’t believe he is allowed to teach when he is teaching things that could get idiots around here killed, and not even in a fun way, they would be killed because they tried to harm a creature that merely had to defend themselves.”

“delightful,” alecto muttered, tight-lipped smile on her features as she glided into the offered seat to at the very least give her arms a break from the books she was carrying around. but considering alecto had been struggling to find a seat to do her homework it seemed like liliane had succeeded in completing even less of whatever tasks she had work on and alecto arched a brow, “already stuck on an essay? the year has barely started.”

it was the voice of someone alecto knew she had to work with. but working with and liking lily were two very different things, and alecto did not like her one bit. she was sure lily didn’t like her either, “don’t get too disappointed when i don’t, evans!” alecto called back over her shoulder, balancing out over the edge of the water with little concern, “i know what i’m doing,” she insisted, and the blonde truly did like to think that she did, it wasn’t just disdain for lily evans and that it was her offering the friendly advice.

alecto pressed her palm against her lips in an attempt to conceal her laughter as she observed minerva mcgonagall’s eyes darken with every word peter spoke. it was almost impossible to not take pity on him though, the genuine curiosity in his voice as he asked question upon highly inapporpriate question only digging himself into a deeper hole. “professor, i’m sure you would like to know some first years were discussing climbing the whomping willow,” alecto announced, bright smile on her lips as she gained the transfiguration teacher’s attention and the woman nodded curtly before disappearing off with a deep sigh and alecto could turn to peter with a giddy smirk, “you owe me, pettigrew,” alecto sang cheerful.
