On August 12, 1997, Mitchell and Elaine Anthony had their first daughter, Darcy Elaine Anthony, at Aurora Bay hospital. The Anthony’s were a happy little family that expanded to be a family of four after Darcy’s little sister was born. Mitchell Anthony was a police officer for the Aurora Bay Police Department, and became the Chief of Police a few years after Kylee was born. Elaine was a realtor in Aurora Bay and made good money for them to have the nice home they did in Seabrook Quarter. Life was perfect for the Anthonys until it wasn’t.
Mitchell and Elaine grew to have marital problems and it left their daughters always listening to arguments that turned into screaming matches. Mitchell said the cruelest things to their mother– things that would forever be seared into Darcy’s mind. And being young and having no idea how to express or handle these big emotions, all while trying to navigate high school, Darcy had her rebellious phase early on in her high school career.
Darcy met Jameson and they were instantly inseparable. He became her absolute best friend, and it was then that they began adopting the misfits in school. Before long they were a group of six. Darcy, Jameson, Travis, Knox, Darcy’s crush, and another misfit they picked up along the way. This group was always there for each other. No matter what.
Darcy was kind of the leader of sorts. She had all the bad ideas that she thought were just genius. She was the one who made the fake IDs, the one who had no fear of stealing alcohol or meeting strangers in a dimly lit parking lot for weed. And it was her idea to make the new Aurora Bay renovations their little hideout.
Aurora Bay had been around since the 1940s and it was constantly trying to expand, something Darcy joked about by calling the town Disneyland. Back when Darcy was in high school, the town had bought more land and they were going to tear down all the old houses in those neighborhoods so they could make new ones for a brand-new neighborhood for Aurora Bay. Darcy told her friends that that’s where they should go to drink and smoke until the town tore it all to pieces. And that’s what they did.
It was always fun for them to party all night in these houses, but there was one night that changed everything.
The group was celebrating their high school graduation, getting high and drinking in one of the abandoned houses. It was bittersweet for them to think it was the last time they’d be hanging out in one since the construction would officially begin the following summer. But they wanted to have just one more night of total chaos and fun.
They blasted music, danced, drank, and smoked. But it was when Darcy and Knox got into an argument and Darcy drunkenly pushed Knox, dropping her cigarette that ultimately started a fire. Everyone got out in time except for Knox. He passed away from smoke inhalation.
Mitchell Anthony arrived on the scene and the moment he saw it was his daughter, he knew he had to do whatever he could to keep her from getting charged. Every bit of evidence that led to Darcy and her friends, he made sure to get rid of it or cover it up somehow. He was successful.
No one knew it was Darcy or her friends that were there that night except for Darcy’s family and the friends that were with her, of course. Mitchell told his family they could never tell a soul it was Darcy who started it. Not only would Darcy be charged, he could lose his job for what he’d done.
The guilt ate Darcy alive. She hated what she’d done, she hated what her father had done, and she just wanted her friend back. It killed her to see how Knox’s parents cried at his funeral, how she and all of her friends were sworn to such a terrible secret. And it ultimately tore Mitchell and Elaine apart. They divorced and Elaine soon left Mitchell and her daughters in Aurora Bay.
Darcy started to fade away. She stopped talking to her friends, she barely spoke to her father and sister, and she stayed inside all the time. The only friend she still hung around was the girl in her group she had a huge crush on. She kept coming around and tried to be there for her.
But ultimately, the guilt was too much for Darcy. She wrote a note to her crush and told her she’d be leaving town. Darcy got into her car and left.
Grief made her more reckless than before, and she was speeding through town one night when she noticed a pedestrian so late that she had to swerve just to miss them. She nearly drove off the bridge. She was injured but far from Aurora Bay, and while a part of her simply wanted to perish then and there, she heard a familiar voice telling her to keep going. It was Knox.
Darcy woke up in a hospital room with stitches and a broken arm, and the first thing she remembered was hearing Knox’s voice. She had to check to make sure this wasn’t some insane dream- that maybe Knox hadn’t actually died in the fire, but social media all said the same. He was gone. But she knew she heard him.
Darcy stayed in the hospital for a few days before her mother was called and she came to pick Darcy up. While Darcy was in the hospital, she let her curiosity get the better of her, and she asked one of the nurses what she believed happens after death. Her nurse told her that she believed in an afterlife but if people had unfinished business, their spirit stayed on the earth. Darcy knew she heard Knox when she’d wrecked, so she needed answers. And this is where her ghost obsession began. She was sure of it. Knox had to have spoken to her that night. His spirit had to have been with her, even if it was just for a moment.
Elaine came and checked Darcy out of the hospital a few days later, and it was then that she learned her mother had started a completely different life without her and her sister. It was devastating to know that her mother had another family, even if the kids were step-children, it was still hard to think that Elaine chose them over her and Kylee.
Darcy stayed with her mother for a few days but ended up leaving. She bummed off people, couch surfing and finding odd jobs just to make it another day, all while still doing her research of the paranormal.
And a few years went by, and after having run out of money and places to stay, and terribly missing her family, Darcy decided she’d stop running. She moved back to Aurora Bay to try to make amends with the people she’d left behind.
Darcy has been back in town for almost a year now and she’s come a long way with her relationships with her friends and family, and she’s just trying to heal now.
