This town was always too small for you. You were drowning in it, as I was drowning in you. I couldn’t take seeing you like this, subdued and quiet and unhappy. But I knew things would only change if I let you go, and I couldn’t set you free, not yet. I held you down, sure it was the best thing for us just because it was the best thing for me. It was selfish and unfair. Stupid of me to even think I could ever keep you chained beside me. You became restless. Boundless. You forgot your roots. I tried to get you back down to earth, not realising I was clipping your wings. You became resentful. Furious. You forgot I used to be your roots. Your home. And it was all my fault. I’d been wrong. This town had never been too small for you. I’d just never given you enough space to grow.
