Known as "El Transparente", this wonderful Baroque altarpiece is dramatically lit by natural light entering from huge overhead skylights in Toledo Cathedral. This blend of architecture, painting and sculpture was created by Narciso Tomé & his four sons (two architects, one painter, and one sculptor), between 1729 and 1732. It is a masterpiece of Baroque and Churrigueresque styles.
Its name, meaning "The Transparent One," refers to the clever design that allows natural light to illuminate the altarpiece and the tabernacle through a large oculus in the wall and a hole in the back of the altarpiece itself.
It incorporates various materials like marble, jasper, bronze, paint, and stucco, with its use of light and mixed materials potentially influenced by Bernini's Cathedra Petri in St Peter's Basilica, Rome.
