Never in a million years did I expect to win tonight, but I'm honored and humbled. There were a lot of really good storytellers out there and I'm glad I got to spend the evening in such delightful company.

It's important work that they're doing and I'm honored to be even a small part of the program.

This is why I do this. I write books so others feel. So they feel seen. So they feel valid. So they feel less alone. Every time I hear that Zoe's story resonated with someone, I feel justified in having the audacity to write the book I needed as a kid. #22debuts #writing #teens

I wrote a scary and personal article for @schoollibraryjournal's @teenlibrariantoolbox called Hope and Representation. Here's a little excerpt. "The only thing Ramona Quimby and Dannie Olguin, Age 8 had in common was that neither of us fit the mold of what a little girl was expected to be. That tiny reflection of myself on the page was enough to make eight-year-old me feel strong and brave and valid in a world and a home that taught me I was small and weak and a burden."
