sail on boys is such a good song and it is absolutely my favorite from the whole musical. allow me to talk about the lyrics in a line by line format.
"find a girl and build a home son, so my father said to me"
establishes the story of this sea shanty, while establishing the protagonist as someone resisting traditional norms/ what they're told.
"but the winds, they bear me onwards and they call me to the sea"
continues the story. our protagonist chooses passion over tradition, while fulfilling the call to the sea, using words that sound pretty together.
"not for me, the plough and furrow, not for me, the feather bed"
the life of a sailor (which is what the song is flatly about) is a rough one. the sailor rejects the comforts and jobs of regular life to follow their dream.
"not for me, the farmer's daughter, to the waves my heart is wed"
the third line follows the patterns of the first two, the fourth breaking to drive home the love of the sailor's life. the sea, the wind, and the waves.
"if it's down, it's down together, if it's up, it's up as one"
on a ship, the entire crew must work together to survive. "the captain goes down with the ship" and all. the song takes it further, declaring that all successes and failures are shared by the crew. and i personally love the way this couplet is structured, with word choice and all.
"so sail on, boys, through stormy weather, soon the journey will be done"
the sailor loves the sea, but it's dangerous. they call to band together because soon they'll be through it as one.
"lift your hearts to the horizon, leave your fears upon the shore"
this is my favorite line in the entire song. on the sea, the horizon forever stretches out. this line calls to mind a sunset over the ocean waves and a hope that it will all be well. and it encourages the sailor to be brave. to set out on a journey.
"this one life is for the living, and we ask for nothing more"
the sailor urges all to sieze the day. they hammer home that you get one chance, so be yourself. live for yourself, essentially.
"if it's down, it's down together, if it's up, it's up as one. so sail on, boys, through stormy weather, soon the journey will be done."
the refrain. it urges unity, togetherness, because like a ship, we are a team, people need to work together, and soon the journey will be done.
i'll leave you with the wise, wise words of natasha hodgson:
"we did, a long while ago now, write a song about going off on an adventure with unlikely success and, with only luck to guide you on your way and hope and will."
(allow for slight paraphrasing my auditory processing is mediocre)

Carrot anon is run by Charles because they sort of came first and had the original idea. Apple is run by Monty because they swooped in and gained a group of very passionate fans. Pear is run by Hester because they tend to be the one most on top of spamming. Quesadilla emoji is run by Jean because Monty made some stupid joke of “psh you should do the quesadilla emoji” and she did it just to spite him. Bevan is wondering what the hell is going on in the basement
