I had the opportunity to attend one of the most important Wixárika celebrations “The Wixárika Holy Week”; celebration that takes place each year in Teteikie , a small Huichol community located in the region of Mezquitic in Jalisco, Mexico. This celebration is marked by the return of pilgrims from Wirikuta, which is one of the most sacred territories in the Wixaritari culture; within the worldview of Wixárika indigenous is believed that the sun came out for the first time in Wirikuta and all that lives and dwells in that territory is sacred. Today this territory is in dispute because the federal government of Mexico has awarded most of the territory to Canadian companies for mining in the área; exploitation that has not been carried out thanks to struggle and dissemination for the protection of Wirikuta sacred region. The pilgrimage that the Huicholes made ​​from the Sierra Madre Occidental of Jalisco to The Quemado hill in the plateau of San Luis Potosi is as ancient as the rituals that take place along the road, which are guided by maraka’ames ( shamans or spiritual guides) ending with Hikuri (peyote) pickup, which is taken back to their communities to perform the cosmic representation of the cycle of life. For one week the town celebrates Wixarika Holly Week in big, performing rituals, parties, veiled, animal sacrifices, traditional dances  and heavy consumption of hikuri and tejuino (fermented corn beverage).

Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a una de las celebraciones más importantes del Pueblo Wixárika “La Semana Santa Wixárika”; celebración que se lleva a cabo cada año en Teteikie, una pequeña comunidad huichol ubicada en el municipio de Mezquitic en Jalisco, México.

Que el placer que juntos inventamos sea otro signo de la libertad.
