ignorance [0]

Complete inability to regard or perform any demonstration of knowledge in an area.

Ranges from “total ignorance” (not being aware of the area’s existence) to “peripheral ignorance” (area’s existence is on the periphery of one’s perception, but individual has made no concentrated effort to understand the area of knowledge)

For example: John thinks that a Guitar might be an instrument, but he’s not sure. Sarah has never even heard of a guitar!

awareness [1] (remember/understand)

Ability to consider, in part, any topic covered by the skill or knowledge area in question. Requires basic knowledge of the area’s constituencies, and how they interoperate.

Ranges from “general awareness” to “direct awareness” as the relationship between the individual components becomes more clear. Those with direct awareness can usually demonstrate some kind of operation (e.g. strumming a guitar).

This area is the most susceptible to the Dunning-Kruger Effect, as while how the system generally “operates” is more or less clear, the direct effects of all its permutations are not. All intricacies are unclear and thus any further conclusions one might come to are merely extrapolations — even though they may not appear as such.

For example: Marly recalls that a guitar has a “neck” lined with metal “frets”. When you press on one of the strings and pluck it, sound comes out! Johnathan can even play a whole chord!

literacy [2] (apply)

The ability to, in a sustained fashion, operate within the bounds of the area of knowledge, but only intermittently.

Ranges from “partial literacy” to “total literacy” as the individual learns to operate within each facet of the area. Only being able to read, for instance, instead of being able to both read and write.

For example: Mariann can play any simple chord progression, albeit with a bit of effort. Olso actually wrote a short, simple melody for the guitar!

fluency [3] (analyze/evaluate)

Perpetual operation within the bounds of the skill and knowledge area is now possible. Individual is aware of and has consciously considered/performed the majority of standard skill “permutations” in each facet.

Ranges from “functional fluency” to “intuitive fluency” as the brain paths become hardened, allowing the skill user to begin to create and effortlessly express themselves within the bounds of this area.

For example: Thomas plays guitar in a band. Daniel plucks the guitar exclusively with his tongue for some reason.

mastery [4] (create)

Understanding of the field and all its facets is enough on the forefront of what is known that further explorations naturally and actively contribute to the expansion of the knowledge area.

There are several types of mastery (I posit) but the major one is “recognized mastery” — that is, mastery exploration/demonstration/expansion that is great enough that it becomes recognized by others on the inventory.
