When reading French texts I always keep my little personal dictionary next to me, ready to write down the definitions of words I don't know. I find it helps a lot with retention of those words. We are allowed to take our book (including all annotations!!) into the exam for this module, so I am annotating my little heart out and making sure to make note of useful critical quotes in the introduction. As an international student I am also permitted a bilingual dictionary in the exam room, but my aim is to have to rely on it as little as possible.
